Abstract

An optical system for an augmented reality head mounted display eyepiece that is configured to deliver images to the eye wherein the optical system includes optics. The optics are disposed so as to receive light output from the light source. The optics further arranged with respect to a spatial light modulator such that the light received from the light source passes through the optics and illuminates the spatial light modulator. The light illuminating the spatial light modulator is redirected back through the optics and is coupled into at least one waveguide through at least one in-coupling optical element. At least a portion of the coupled light is ejected from at least one waveguide by at least one out-coupling optical element and directed to the eye of the user.

Claims (25)

1. A display system configured to project light to an eye of a user, the display system comprising:

at least one light source;

a spatial light modulator having one or more pixels and configured to form an image; and

at least one waveguide having a first major surface and a second major surface disposed in an X-Z plane and opposite the first major surface, and first and second edges between the first and second major surfaces, the spatial light modulator being closer to the first major surface of the at least one waveguide and the at least one light source closer to the second major surface of the at least one waveguide, wherein a diffractive optical element is disposed on the second major surface,

wherein the display system is configured such that light from the light source is received into the at least one waveguide through the second major surface at a first location in the X-Z plane and is transmitted through the first major surface towards the spatial light modulator such that the light from the light source does not pass through the diffractive optical element, and at least a portion of the light illuminating the spatial light modulator is redirected back and diffractively coupled into the at least one waveguide by the diffractive optical element at a second location that is offset in the X-Z plane from the first location to be guided therein, and

wherein the at least one waveguide is configured to be positioned on a head of the user in front of the user's eye such that at least a portion of the light from the spatial light modulator diffractively coupled into the at least one waveguide and guided therein is output from the at least one waveguide to the eye of the user to display image content to the user.

2. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source comprises a plurality of laterally displaced light emitters configured to output light.

3. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising a reflective coupling optic configured to collect light output from the light source.

4. The display system of claim 3 , wherein the coupling optic comprises a compound parabolic collector (CPC).

5. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one waveguide comprises a stack of waveguides.

6. The display system of claim 5 , wherein different waveguides of the stack of waveguides are configured to output light with different respective colors.

7. The display system of claim 5 , wherein the stack of waveguides comprises first, second, and third waveguides configured to output a first color light, a second color light, and a third color light, respectively, the first, second, and third color light being red, blue, and green color light, respectively.

8. The display system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one light source comprises (i) a first light source disposed to direct light to a first in-coupling optical area of a first waveguide to couple light into the first waveguide to be guided therein, and (ii) a second light source disposed to direct light to the second in-coupling optical area of a second waveguide to couple light into a second waveguide to be guided therein.

9. The display system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second in-coupling optical areas are laterally displaced with respect to each other for receiving light into the first and second waveguides, respectively.

10. The display system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second in-coupling optical elements are configured to in-couple light of a predetermined polarization.

11. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source comprises a polarized light source.

12. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising a polarizer disposed between the at least one light source and the spatial light modulator.

13. The display system of claim 12 , wherein the polarizer is tilted with respect to the at least one waveguide.

14. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising optics having optical power between the at least one waveguide and the spatial light modulator, the optics disposed so as to receive light output from the light source, the optics arranged with respect to the spatial light modulator such that the light received from the light source passes through the optics and illuminates the spatial light modulator.

15. The display system of claim 14 , further comprising a static lens disposed in a path between the at least one waveguide and the user's eye.

16. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising a prescription lens configured to provide refractive correction of the eye of the user.

17. The display system of claim 1 , further comprising a circular polarizer.

18. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the eye is closer to the first major surface than the second major surface.

19. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a liquid crystal (LC) display or a digital microdevice (DMD).

20. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the light illuminating the spatial light modulator comprises illumination light.
