Abstract

One nonlimiting variation of a detection arrangement includes one or more sensors each structured to detect at least one biochemical substance indicative of biochemistry of one or more target insect species and provide a corresponding sensor signal, a controller responsive to the sensor signal of each of the one or more sensors to determine if the one or more insect species are present and generate a corresponding output signal, and an indicator responsive to the output signal to indicate the presence of the one or more insect species.

Claims (13)

1. A method for controlling insects, the method comprising:

receiving, by an insect control device, a sample of a substance;

analyzing, by one or more sensors of the insect control device, the substance received by the insect control device;

generating, by the one or more sensors, a sensor signal in response to analyzing the sub stance;

receiving, by a controller of the insect control device, the sensor signal;

determining, by the controller, if the substance is indicative of presence of one or more insects based on the sensor signal, wherein when the substance is indicative of presence of the one or more insects the substance comprises a hormone, pheromone, or kairomone produced by the one or more insects; and

providing, by the controller, an indication of the presence of one or more insects to a remote location to monitor the presence of one or more insects from the remote location.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the indication to the remote location comprises relaying the indication via a communication pathway to a remote computing device at the remote location.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the

communication pathway comprises a wireless communication pathway.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the communication pathway comprises a wireless network.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising exterminating, by the insect control device, one or more insects in response to determining by the controller that the substance is indicative of the presence of the one or more insects.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein exterminating the one or more insects comprises delivering an insecticide configured to exterminate the one or more insects with an applicator tip of the insect control device, wherein the insecticide is held by a reservoir of the insect control device.
