Batteries utilizing cathode coatings directly on nanoporous separators
Provided are methods of preparing a separator/anode assembly for use in an electric current producing cell, wherein the assembly comprises an anode current collector layer interposed between a first anode layer and a second anode layer and a porous separator layer on the side of the first anode layer opposite to the anode current collector layer, wherein the first anode layer is coated directly on the separator layer.
1. A lithium battery comprising a separator/cathode assembly, the separator/cathode assembly comprising:
a cathode layer; and
a porous separator layer on one side of said cathode layer, said porous separator layer comprising a polymer and inorganic oxide particles;
wherein said cathode layer is coated directly on said separator layer.
2. The lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein said inorganic oxide particles comprise aluminum boehmite.
3. The lithium battery of claim 1 , further comprising a cathode current collector layer on said cathode layer on the side opposite to said separator layer, and said cathode current collector layer comprises a metal.
4. The lithium battery of claim 3 , wherein the metal is aluminum.
5. The lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein the cathode layer comprises a cathode active material in a pigment form.
6. The lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein said cathode layer is coated using a pigment dispersion comprising an organic solvent.
7. The lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein said cathode layer comprises a cathode active material in a pigment form and a conductive carbon pigment.
