Abstract

A tintable window is described having a tintable coating, e.g., an electrochromic device coating, for regulating light transmitted through the window. In some embodiments, the window has a transparent display in the window's viewable region. Transparent displays may be substantially transparent when not in use, or when the window is viewed in a direction facing away from the transparent display. Windows may have sensors for receiving user commands and/or for monitoring environmental conditions. Transparent displays can display graphical user interfaces to, e.g., control window functions. Windows, as described herein, offer an alternative display to conventional projectors, TVs, and monitors. Windows may also be configured to receive, transmit, or block wireless communications from passing through the window. A window control system may share computational resources between controllers (e.g., at different windows). In some cases, the computational resources of the window control system are utilized by other building systems and devices.

Claims (50)

1. A system comprising:

a transparent display configured to display information and/or images; and

a tintable window lite having a physical coupling with the transparent display, wherein:

the tintable window lite comprises an electrochromic (EC) device including at least one layer of EC material that exhibits a change from one optical state to another as a result of reversible ion insertion into the EC material when an electric potential is applied across the EC device;

the transparent display comprises a transparent organic light emitting diode (TOLED) array; and

the transparent display is disposed fully or partially coextensively with the tintable window lite.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the physical coupling comprises the transparent display being laminated onto the tintable window lite.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the physical coupling comprises the transparent display being reversibly mounted with the tintable window lite using a framing mount.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the framing mount comprises a moveable component.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the moveable component is configured to rotate away from the transparent display to facilitate removal of the transparent display from the tintable window lite.

6. The system of claim 3 , wherein the framing mount is configured to facilitate disconnection of the transparent display from an electrical connection.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the electrical connection includes a connection to a control system, a local controller, a controller of the tintable window lite, a controller of the transparent display, and/or a controller of the electrochromic device.

8. The system of claim 3 , wherein the physical coupling comprises the transparent display being reversibly mounted with the tintable window lite by being mounted to a framing of the tintable window lite.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the transparent display is secured to the framing at least in part by using the framing mount.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transparent display and the tintable window lite are configured to be separable from one another.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the physical coupling comprises a reversible connection between the transparent display and the tintable window lite configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without damaging the tintable window lite.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transparent display and the tintable window lite are coupled in a manner that allows removal of the transparent display without removal of a framing of the tintable window lite.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the transparent display and the tintable window are coupled in an accessible manner that facilitates insertion and/or removal of the transparent display without removal of a framing of the tintable window.

14. A method comprising:

displaying information and/or images on a transparent display, the transparent display configured in tandem with a tintable window lite via a physical coupling, lite the transparent display attached to a frame of the tintable window lite via a reversible connection or attached to the tintable window lite, wherein:

the tintable window lite comprises an electrochromic (EC) device including at least one layer of EC material that exhibits a change from one optical state to another as a result of reversible ion insertion into the EC material when an electric potential is applied across the EC device; and

the transparent display comprises a transparent organic light emitting diode (TOLED) array disposed fully or partially coextensively with the tintable window lite.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the physical coupling comprises one or both of:

a reversible connection between the transparent display and a frame of the tintable window lite configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without damaging the tintable window lite or removing the frame; and

an accessible connection configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without removing the tintable window lite from an installed location.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the physical coupling includes a docking arrangement that supports the transparent display at one or more edges.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the docking arrangement includes electrical connections for powering the transparent display and/or for providing communication to the transparent display.

18. An apparatus comprising at least one controller configured to:

display information and/or images on a transparent display, the transparent display being associated with a tintable window lite, the tintable window lite having a physical coupling with the transparent display wherein

the tintable window lite comprises an electrochromic (EC) device including at least one layer of EC material that exhibits a change from one optical state to another as a result of reversible ion insertion into the EC material when an electric potential is applied across the EC device; and

the transparent display comprises a transparent organic light emitting diode (TOLED) array disposed fully or partially coextensively with the tintable window lite.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the physical coupling comprises one or both of:

a reversible connection between the transparent display and the tintable window configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without damaging the tintable window; and

an accessible connection configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without removing the tintable window from an installed location.

20. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the physical coupling includes a docking arrangement that supports the transparent display at one or more edges.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the docking arrangement includes electrical connections for powering the transparent display and/or for providing communication to the transparent display.

22. A building comprising:

a tintable window lite, the tintable window lite having a physical coupling with a transparent display, the transparent display being configured to display information and/or images, wherein:

the tintable window lite comprises an electrochromic (EC) device including at least one layer of EC material that exhibits a change from one optical state to another as a result of reversible ion insertion into the EC material when an electric potential is applied across the EC device; and

the transparent display comprises a transparent organic light emitting diode (TOLED) array disposed fully or partially coextensively with the tintable window lite.

23. The building of claim 22 , wherein the physical coupling comprises one or both of:

a reversible connection between the transparent display and the tintable window configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without damaging the tintable window; and

an accessible connection configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without removing the tintable window from an installed location.

24. The building of claim 22 , wherein the physical coupling includes a docking arrangement that supports the transparent display at one or more edges.

25. The building of claim 24 , wherein the docking arrangement includes an electrical connection for powering the transparent display and/or for providing communication to the transparent display.

26. The building of claim 25 , wherein the docking arrangement is configured to facilitate disconnection of the transparent display from the electrical connection.

27. The building of claim 26 , wherein the electrical connection includes a connection to a control system, a local controller, a controller of the tintable window, a controller of the transparent display, and/or a controller of the electrochromic device.

28. The building of claim 22 , wherein the transparent display and the tintable window are configured to be separable from one another.

29. The building of claim 22 , wherein the physical coupling comprises a reversible connection between the transparent display and the tintable window configured to permit removal and/or replacement of the transparent display without damaging the tintable window.

30. The building of claim 22 , wherein the transparent display and the tintable window are coupled in an accessible manner that facilitates insertion and/or removal of the transparent display without removal of a framing of the tintable window.
