Abstract

According to an aspect, a cannula insertion mechanism includes a seal and a cannula carrier. The seal is configured to surround an opening of a housing, the seal including a first seal surface and a second seal surface, the first seal surface facing toward the opening, and the second seal surface facing away from the opening. The cannula carrier is configured to drive a cannula in a first direction through the opening of the housing, the cannula carrier having a first carrier surface and a second carrier surface, the first carrier surface being configured to exert a compression force on the second seal surface when the cannula carrier drives the cannula in the first direction, thereby causing the first seal surface to expand in a second direction to engage the second carrier surface via a clamping force.

Claims (30)

1. A cannula insertion mechanism, comprising:

a seal configured to surround an opening of a housing, the seal including a first seal surface and a second seal surface, the first seal surface facing toward the opening, and the second seal surface facing away from the opening; and

a cannula;

a cannula carrier surrounding at least a portion of the cannula and configured to drive the cannula in a first direction through the opening of the housing, the cannula carrier having a first carrier surface and a second carrier surface, the first carrier surface being configured to exert a compression force on the second seal surface when the cannula carrier drives the cannula in the first direction, thereby causing the first seal surface to expand in a second direction to engage the second carrier surface such that, when the cannula carrier is seated within the housing with the cannula in an inserted position, the cannula carrier radially compresses the seal.

2. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the first seal surface comprises one or more seal rings.

3. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the first seal surface is substantially perpendicular to the second seal surface, and wherein the first direction is substantially perpendicular to the second direction.

4. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a seal retainer configured to exert a clamping force on the seal at a third seal surface that is opposite the first seal surface.

5. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the cannula carrier includes a third carrier surface configured to exert a clamping force on the seal at a third seal surface.

6. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 5 , wherein the third carrier surface and the third seal surface are angled surfaces configured to engage each other.

7. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a trocar carrier configured to be coupled to the cannula carrier until the cannula is driven through the opening of the housing.

8. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 7 , further comprising:

a trocar retraction spring that is held in a compressed state between the trocar carrier and the cannula carrier when the trocar carrier is coupled to the cannula carrier.

9. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 8 , wherein the trocar carrier is configured to decouple from the cannula carrier based on rotation relative to the cannula carrier, the rotation allowing the trocar retraction spring to drive the trocar carrier in a third direction opposite the first direction.

10. The cannula insertion mechanism of claim 9 , wherein the rotation is caused by an angled surface of the trocar carrier engaging a fixed surface as the cannula is driven in the first direction.

11. A fluid delivery device comprising:

a housing;

a cannula; and

a cannula insertion mechanism comprising:

a seal configured to surround an opening of the housing, the seal including a first seal surface and a second seal surface, the first seal surface facing toward the opening, and the second seal surface facing away from the opening; and

a cannula carrier surrounding at least a portion of the cannula and configured to drive the cannula in a first direction through the opening of the housing, the cannula carrier having a first carrier surface and a second carrier surface, the first carrier surface being configured to exert a compression force on the second seal surface when the cannula carrier drives the cannula in the first direction, thereby causing the first seal surface to expand in a second direction to engage the second carrier surface, such that, when the cannula carrier is seated within the housing with the cannula in an inserted position, the cannula carrier radially compresses the seal.

12. The fluid delivery device of claim 11 , wherein the first seal surface comprises one or more seal rings.

13. The fluid delivery device of claim 11 , wherein the first seal surface is substantially perpendicular to the second seal surface, and wherein the first direction is substantially perpendicular to the second direction.

14. The fluid delivery device of claim 11 , further comprising a seal retainer configured to exert a clamping force on the seal at a third seal surface that is opposite the first seal surface.

15. The fluid delivery device of claim 11 , wherein the cannula carrier includes a third carrier surface configured to exert a clamping force on the seal at a third seal surface.

16. The fluid delivery device of claim 15 , wherein the third carrier surface and the third seal surface are angled surfaces configured to engage each other.

17. The fluid delivery device of claim 11 , further comprising a trocar carrier configured to be coupled to the cannula carrier until the cannula is driven through the opening of the housing.

18. The fluid delivery device of claim 17 , further comprising:

a trocar retraction spring that is held in a compressed state between the trocar carrier and the cannula carrier when the trocar carrier is coupled to the cannula carrier.

19. The fluid delivery device of claim 18 , wherein the trocar carrier is configured to decouple from the cannula carrier based on rotation relative to the cannula carrier, the rotation allowing the trocar retraction spring to drive the trocar carrier in a third direction opposite the first direction.

20. The fluid delivery device of claim 19 , wherein the rotation is caused by an angled surface of the trocar carrier engaging a fixed surface as the cannula is driven in the first direction.
