Abstract

One variation of a method for selectively advertising items in an image includes: loading an image to a social feed; receiving a first tag and a second tag including identification of a first item and a second item visible in the image, respectively; based on the first tag and the second tag, correlating the first item with a first product and the second item with the second product; based on the first product and the second product, sourcing a first link to a first electronic storefront and a second link to a second electronic storefront that facilitate purchase of the first product and the second product, respectively; and selectively displaying a first visual cue of the first link and a second visual cue of the second link to a first user and to a second user, respectively, according to demographics of the first user and the second user.

Claims (41)

1. A system comprising at least one processor and at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive an image and a tag identifying an item depicted within the image from a device associated with a first user of a networking system;

based on the tag, associate the item with a product;

using a machine vision technique, identify the item in the image;

provide the image for display to a second user of the networking system along with a visual cue indicating the product within the image; and

in response to an interaction with the image by the second user, provide an interface comprising a description of the product,

wherein the visual cue is applied to the item in the image using the machine vision technique.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive a second tag identifying a second item depicted within the image;

based on the second tag, associate the second item with a second product;

provide the image for display to the second user of the networking system along with a second visual cue indicating the second product within the image; and

in response to an interaction with the image by the second user, provide an interface comprising a description of the second product.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to associate the item with the product based on machine learning techniques.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the machine learning techniques comprise at least one of object recognition, character recognition, template matching, or edge detection.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visual cue comprises a circle over a region of the image corresponding to the item.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the visual cue comprises a link to the interface.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the interaction with the image by the second user comprises the second user selecting the visual cue.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to extract information about the product from the tag.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the extracted information comprises at least one of a product description, product name, stock keeping unit (SKU), or bar code.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the description of the product comprises at least one of a product name, product brand, or product price.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the interface further comprises an enlarged image of the product.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the interface further comprises a purchasing link.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the purchasing link comprises a buy now button.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to determine whether the image meets at least one of a threshold image quality, threshold image size, or preferred image aspect ratio.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to, in response to an interaction with the image by the second user, highlight a region of the image corresponding to the item.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second user is a follower of the first user within the networking system.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the product comprises an article of clothing, furniture, an electronic good, or a consumable good.

18. A method comprising:

receiving an image and a tag identifying an item depicted within the image from a device associated with a first user of a networking system;

based on the tag, associating the item with a product;

using a machine vision technique, identify the item in the image;

providing the image for display to a second user of the networking system along with a visual cue indicating the product within the image; and

in response to an interaction with the image by the second user, providing an interface comprising a description of the product,

wherein the visual cue is applied to the item in the image using the machine vision technique.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

receiving a second tag identifying a second item depicted within the image;

based on the second tag, associating the second item with a second product;

providing the image for display to the second user of the networking system along with a second visual cue indicating the second product within the image; and

in response to an interaction with the image by the second user, providing an interface comprising a description of the second product.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

causing the system to associate the item with the product based on machine learning techniques.
