Abstract

A radial head assembly is provided that includes a stem, a collar, a locking ring, and an articular member. The stem has a convex articular head on one end thereof. The locking ring has a ring wall, which has a ring opening. The ring wall has an angular outer surface and a slot configured to permit the ring wall to radially expand. The angular outer surface engages an angular portion of an interior surface of the collar. The articular member and the locking ring define an articular space within the collar. The articular space is configured to receive the convex articular head.

Claims (39)

1. A surgical method, comprising:

attaching a distal portion of a stem to a first bone;

placing an opening of an articular assembly on a proximal end of the stem, the articular assembly comprising:

a concave surface disposed on the articular assembly opposite the opening to face a second bone opposite the first bone, a collar defining the opening, a space extending from the opening into the interior of the articular assembly, an interior surface proximate to the opening, and a trapping member at least partially disposed in the opening; and

advancing a proximal end of the stem through the trapping member such that the proximal end is at least partially disposed between the trapping member and the concave surface and the trapping member is disposed between the proximal end of the stem and the interior trapping surface,

wherein the articular assembly further comprises an articular member and a locking ring, and wherein the articular member comprises the trapping member and the concave surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collar comprises a first collar portion and a second collar portion.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first collar portion comprises a first collar engagement feature, wherein the second collar portion comprises a second collar engagement feature, and wherein the first collar engagement feature is configured to engage the second collar engagement feature to prevent removal of at least the proximal portion of the stem from the interior of the articular assembly.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting the locking ring and the articular member at least partially within the interior of the collar prior to placing an opening of an articular assembly on a proximal end of the stem.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein inserting the locking ring and articular member comprises axially aligning the locking ring with a transition surface of the collar.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein inserting the locking ring and articular member comprises axially aligning the locking ring with an interior trapping surface of the collar.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stem comprises an articular head on a proximal end of the stem.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the ring wall comprises a slot configured to permit the ring wall to radially expand.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the mating surface comprises a second concave surface configured to engage at least the proximal portion of the stem inserted into the articular space.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the locking ring is configured to receive at least a portion of a stem through the ring opening to be disposed within the collar as the locking ring radially expands.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising expanding the trapping member.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the articular assembly further comprises a locking ring comprising a ring wall defining a ring opening, and wherein the ring wall is configured to radially expand.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trapping member includes a mating surface.

14. A method, comprising:

attaching a distal portion of a stem to a first bone;

placing an opening of an articular assembly on a proximal end of the stem, the articular assembly comprising:

a collar comprising a collar wall defining a first collar opening, a second collar opening, and a passage therethrough, the collar wall having an interior collar surface comprising a collar engagement feature proximate to the first collar opening; and

an articular member comprising:

a first concave surface; and

a second concave surface disposed at an end of the articular member opposite to the first concave surface; and

wherein the articular member at least partially defines an articular space within the collar when disposed in the collar; and

advancing the proximal end of the stem through the articular assembly such that the proximal end is at least partially disposed between the articular member and the first concave surface and the articular member is disposed between the proximal end of the stem and an interior trapping surface.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the collar comprises a first locking ring comprising a first ring wall defining a first ring opening, the first ring wall being configured to radially expand.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the collar comprises a second locking ring comprising a second ring wall defining a second ring opening, wherein the first ring wall comprises a first slot configured to permit the first ring wall to radially expand, and wherein the second ring wall comprises a second slot configured to permit the second ring wall to radially expand.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first locking ring comprises a first index surface, wherein the second locking ring comprises a second index surface, and wherein the first index surface is configured to engage the second index surface such that the first slot of the first locking ring and the second slot of the second locking ring are not coaxially aligned when the first index surface engages the second index surface.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the articular assembly further comprises a trapping member including a mating surface.

19. A surgical method, comprising:

attaching a distal portion of a stem to a first bone;

placing an opening of an articular assembly on a proximal end of the stem, the articular assembly comprising:

a collar defining the opening and a space extending from the opening into the interior of the articular assembly;

an interior surface proximate to the opening;

a trapping member at least partially disposed in the opening; and

an articular member comprising a first concave surface and a second concave surface disposed at an end of the articular member opposite to the first concave surface; and

advancing a proximal end of the stem through the trapping member such that the proximal end is at least partially disposed between the trapping member and the first concave surface and the trapping member is disposed between the proximal end of the stem and the interior trapping surface.
