Abstract

A coke oven includes an oven chamber configured to support and heat a coal bed, a castable slab below the oven chamber, and a foundation supporting the heat recovery oven. One or more beams are positioned between the castable slab and the foundation. The beams extend from a first end of the oven chamber to a second end of the oven chamber, forming a plurality of air gaps between the castable slab and the foundation. Heat from the oven chamber is dissipated by the one or more beams.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

providing a coke oven including an oven chamber, a foundation supporting the oven chamber and separated from the oven chamber by one or more air gaps, and a forced cooling system configured to force a fluid through an air gap of the one or more air gaps;

heating a coal bed in the oven chamber;

receiving an indication that a temperature of a limiting material of the coke oven exceeds a temperature limit, and

after receiving the indication and while heating the coal bed in the oven chamber, activating the forced cooling system to force the fluid through the air gap.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forced cooling system comprises a fan, the fan configured to push air into the air gap to drive the air through the air gap.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coke oven further comprises a sensor positioned in the air gap and a controller communicatively coupled to the sensor and the forced cooling system, and wherein the method further comprises:

detecting, using the sensor, the temperature of the limiting material; and

activating, by the controller, the forced cooling system to regulate an amount of the fluid that is forced through the air gap based on the temperature detected by the sensor.

4. A method for cooling a coke oven foundation, the method comprising:

providing a coke oven system including an oven chamber, a foundation supporting the oven chamber and separated from the oven chamber by one or more air gaps, a sensor in at least one of the air gaps, a forced cooling system, and a controller operatively coupled to the sensor and the forced cooling system;

heating a coal bed in the oven chamber;

receiving an indication from the sensor; and

based at least in part on the received indication, causing the forced cooling system to provide a fluid directed toward an air gap of the one or more air gaps.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the forced cooling system comprises a fan operatively coupled to the controller, and a valve fluidically coupled to the fan and operatively coupled to the controller, and wherein the fluid is provided via the fan toward the air gap.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the coke oven system includes beams between the foundation and the oven chamber, the beams extending from a first area below a first end portion of the coke oven toward a second area below a second end portion of the coke oven, wherein adjacent ones of the beams at least partially define the one or more air gaps, and wherein causing the forced cooling system to provide the fluid comprises causing the forced cooling system to provide the fluid between the adjacent ones of the beams.

7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising heating the coal bed in the oven chamber while causing the forced cooling system to provide the fluid.

8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising initiating heating the coal bed in the oven chamber, and wherein causing the forced cooling system to provide a fluid occurs after initiating heating the coal bed.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor.

10. A method for providing a cooling fluid, the method comprising:

operatively coupling a controller to a forced cooling system including a fan, and a valve operatively coupled to the fan via a common pipe;

receiving an indication from a sensor operatively coupled to the controller; and

based on the received indication, causing, via the controller, the forced cooling system to activate the fan and actuate the valve, thereby causing a cooling fluid to be directed to an air gap between two beams positioned between a foundation and an oven chamber of a coke oven.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising heating a coal bed in the oven chamber while causing the forced cooling system to activate the fan.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising initiating heating a coal bed in the oven chamber, and wherein causing the forced cooling system to activate the fan occurs after initiating heating the coal bed.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

heating a coal bed in the oven chamber.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the sensor is a temperature sensor.
