Abstract

In one embodiment, a stylus with one or more electrodes and one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying logic for transmitting signals wirelessly to a device through a touch sensor of the device has one or more sensors for detecting movement of the stylus.

Claims (39)

1. A stylus, comprising:

a body having a textured region;

an electrode operable to wirelessly transmit a signal to a touch sensor of a device; and

a sensor operable to detect a stylus movement,

wherein the stylus or the device determines a functionality of the stylus or the device based on a type of object that slides across the textured region.

2. The stylus of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor operable to detect a stylus movement.

3. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the functionality of the stylus or the device comprises at least one of:

transferring data between the stylus and the device;

accessing menus or commands specific to data stored by the stylus or the device; and

accessing menus or commands specific to content displayed by a display of the device.

4. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprise at least one of an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a global positioning system (GPS), or a gyroscope.

5. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the functionality of the stylus or the device is further determined based at least on one of:

a stylus location during a stylus movement;

a shaking of the stylus; or

a stylus rotation.

6. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the functionality of the stylus or the device is further determined based at least on a vibration of the stylus resulting from an object touching the stylus.

7. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the functionality of the stylus or the device is further determined based at least on:

data stored by the stylus; and

a specific order of a sequence of movements of the stylus.

8. The stylus of claim 7 , wherein at least one movement in the sequence of movement of the stylus comprises shaking, rotation, or vibration.

9. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the functionality of the stylus or the device comprises one or more of:

modifying content displayed by the display of the device;

authenticating a user of the stylus to the stylus or the device; or

altering a power setting of the stylus or the device.

10. The stylus of claim 9 , wherein modifying content displayed by the display of the device comprises one or more of:

adding content displayed by the display of the device;

removing content displayed by the display of the device;

altering characteristics of content displayed by the display of the device; or

moving content displayed by the display of the device.

11. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the textured region is in a middle portion of the body.

12. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein the texture region comprises ridges or grooves.

13. The stylus of claim 1 , wherein when a fingernail slides across the texture region, the stylus or the device determines a first functionality of the plurality of functionalities, and when a fingertip slides across the texture region, the stylus or the device determines a second functionality of the plurality of functionalities.

14. A method, comprising:

detecting, by a sensor on a stylus, an object sliding on a textured region of the stylus,

wherein the stylus includes an electrode that wirelessly transmits a signal to a sensor of the device; and

determining, by the stylus or the device, a functionality of the stylus or the device based on a type of object that slid across the textured region.

15. One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media embodying logic that is operable when executed to:

determine a functionality of the stylus or the device based on a type of object that slides across a textured region on a body of the stylus;

wherein the stylus comprises an electrode that wirelessly transmits a signal to a touch sensor of a device.
