Abstract

Systems and methods are described for providing a 3D display, such as a light-field display. In some embodiments, a display device includes a light-emitting layer comprising an addressable array of light-emitting elements. An optical layer overlays the light-emitting layer. The optical layer includes a plurality of distributed lenses. In some embodiments, the distributed lenses include non-contiguous lens regions. In some embodiments, distributed lens regions with different optical centers are interlaced with one another. A spatial light modulator is operative to provide control over which lens regions transmit light from the light-emitting layer outside the display device. In some embodiments, the use of interlaced and/or non-contiguous distributed lenses provides improved display resolution with a reduction in diffraction effects.

Claims (28)

1. A display device comprising:

a light-emitting layer comprising an addressable array of light-emitting elements;

an optical layer overlaying the light-emitting layer, wherein the optical layer includes interlaced distributed lenses, comprising:

a first distributed lens formed by lens regions that constitute a portion of a first lens having a first principal focus point and a second distributed lens formed by lens regions that constitute a portion of a second lens having a second principal focus point,

wherein the lens regions of the first and of the second distributed lenses are capable of being interlaced without an overlap; and

a spatial light modulator operative to provide control over which of the lens regions of the distributed lenses transmit light from the light-emitting layer to the outside of the display device, wherein lens regions that are allowed to transmit light focus the light at a position of a voxel to be displayed.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein at least one lens region of the first distributed lens is located between at least two lens regions of the second distributed lens, the first and the second distributed lenses having different optical centers.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein each of the distributed lenses includes at least two non-contiguous lens regions.

4. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator comprises a plurality of light-modulating pixels, and wherein each pixel of the spatial light modulator corresponds to no more than one of the lens regions.

5. The display device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the distributed lenses is a varifocal distributed lens.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the first lens and the second lens are circularly symmetric lenses.

7. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the first distributed lens is a mirror image of the second distributed lens.

8. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the interlaced distributed lenses have a different pitch in the horizontal and in the vertical directions.

9. A method of operating a display device, the method comprising:

selectively emitting light from a light-emitting element in an addressable array of light-emitting elements, the emitted light being emitted toward an optical layer of interlaced distributed lenses, comprising:

a first distributed lens formed by lens regions that constitute a portion of a first lens having a first principal focus point and a second distributed lens formed by lens regions that constitute a portion of a second lens having a second principal focus point,

wherein the lens regions of the first and of the second distributed lenses are capable of being interlaced without an overlap; and

operating a spatial light modulator to allow the emitted light to travel outside the display device through selected lens regions of the distributed lenses, wherein the selected lens regions focus the emitted light at a position of a voxel to be displayed.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the selected lens regions include at least two non-contiguous lens regions within the first distributed lens.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first distributed lens has a first optical center, and wherein the first distributed lens is interlaced with a second distributed lens of the distributed lenses having a second optical center different from the first optical center.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one lens region of the first distributed lens is located between at least two lens regions of the second distributed lens.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining a position of a voxel to be displayed; and

selecting the light-emitting element and the first distributed lens based on the determined voxel position.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the light-emitting element and the distributed lens are selected such that the light-emitting element and an optical center of the first distributed lens are substantially collinear.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first lens and the second lens are circularly symmetric lenses.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first distributed lens is a mirror image of the second distributed lens.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the interlaced distributed lenses have a different pitch in the horizontal and in the vertical directions.
