Abstract

Article for sampling comprising inner layer, one or more outer layers, and optional scouring layer on a portion of the one or more outer layers.

Claims (30)

1 . An article comprising an inner layer contained within one or more outer layers, the inner layer comprising a hydrophilic, absorbent porous textile having a solids content of 0.5%-30%, optionally 0.5% to 15%; and

the one or more outer layers comprising a porous, hydrophilic, wicking textile having a solids content of about 2%-40%; and

further comprising a scouring layer disposed over a portion of at least one of the one or more outer layers and one or more second portions of the one or more outer layers, wherein the scouring layer is not disposed over the one or more second portions.

3 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the scouring layer comprises a cured resin and optionally further comprises a plurality of abrasive particles having a mohs hardness of 3 or greater.

4 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the scouring layer comprises a plurality of abrasive particles, and wherein the plurality of abrasive particles comprise glass particles, ceramic particles, or a combination thereof.

5 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilic, absorbent porous textile of the inner layer comprises viscose fibers, rayon fibers, or both viscose and rayon fibers.

6 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the porous, hydrophilic, wicking textile of the one or more outer layers comprises viscose fibers, rayon fibers, or both viscose and rayon fibers.

7 . The article of claim 5 , wherein at least part of the viscose fibers or rayon fibers thermally bonded to poly(ethylene terephthalate).

8 . The article of claim 1 a first outer layer and a second outer layer, wherein

the first outer layer is sealed to the second outer layer at one or more seals; and

the inner layer is disposed between the first outer layer and the second outer layer.

9 . The article of claim 1 comprising a single outer layer, wherein

the single outer layer is sealed to itself at one or more seals; and

wherein the inner layer is contained within the single outer layer.

The article of claim 1 , wherein the scouring layer is disposed at least a first portion of the one or more outer layers in the form of a plurality of lines or geometrical shapes over more than one first portions of the one or more outer layers, the plurality of lines or geometrical shapes being present in a repeating pattern on the one or more outer layers.

12 . The article of claim 1 , further comprising a handle.

15 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilic, absorbent porous textile is a nonwoven.

17 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the porous, hydrophilic, wicking textile is a nonwoven.

18 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the inner layer and the one or more outer layers are biocide free.

19 . A method of collecting a sample of microorganisms from a surface, the method comprising contacting a surface with the article of any of claim 1 .

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the surface is a food preparation surface, a workstation surface, or a machine surface.

21 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the surface is a biological surface.

22 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the biological surface is a biofilm-coated surface, a skin surface, or a wound surface.

23 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the article is an article of claim 14 and wherein the method comprises scouring the surface with the scouring layer and subsequently contacting the surface with the second portion of the outer layer.

24 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the method further comprises releasing at least a portion of the sample of microorganisms from the article to a liquid.

25 . The article of claim 5 , wherein at least part of the viscose fibers or rayon fibers thermally bonded to poly(ethylene terephthalate).
