Abstract

A method of disposing of a residual pharmaceutical composition from an IV bag includes coupling the IV bag to a pharmaceutical dispenser coupler. The method also includes extracting at least a portion of the residual pharmaceutical composition from the IV bag through the pharmaceutical dispenser coupler. The method further includes treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition in one of a chemical and physical manner.

Claims (30)

1. A method of disposing of a residual pharmaceutical composition from an IV bag with a pharmaceutical waste system including a main housing with a security mechanism, the method comprising:

coupling the IV bag to a pharmaceutical dispenser coupler;

extracting at least a portion of the residual pharmaceutical composition from the IV bag through the pharmaceutical dispenser coupler;

treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition in one of a chemical and physical manner; and

unlocking the main housing to access the pharmaceutical waste system.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises separating the extracted pharmaceutical composition into a purified waste portion and a contaminated waste portion.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein separating the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises filtering at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein filtering is further defined as binding at least a portion of the residual pharmaceutical composition extracted from IV bag with a filter media to retain the contaminated waste portion.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the filter media comprises activated charcoal.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises chemically treating the extracted pharmaceutical composition.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein chemically treating the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises deactivating the extracted pharmaceutical composition, denaturing the extracted pharmaceutical composition, oxidizing the extracted pharmaceutical composition, and combinations thereof.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein chemically treating the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises oxidizing the extracted pharmaceutical composition with a chlorine-based oxidizing agent.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition by oxidizing the extracted pharmaceutical composition to form an unrecoverable pharmaceutical waste, and separating the unrecoverable pharmaceutical waste between a purified waste portion and a contaminated waste portion.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising temporarily storing at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition in a reservoir before treating the at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising coupling a second IV bag to a second pharmaceutical dispenser coupler.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing a replaceable cartridge including a filter media from the pharmaceutical waste system.

13. A method of disposing of a residual pharmaceutical composition from an IV bag coupled to a pharmaceutical dispenser coupler, the method comprising:

extracting at least a portion of the residual pharmaceutical composition from the IV bag through the pharmaceutical dispenser coupler;

separating the extracted pharmaceutical composition into a purified waste portion and a contaminated waste portion; and

treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition in one of a chemical and physical manner.

14. The method of claim 13 further comprising analyzing at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition to determine a characteristic of the extracted pharmaceutical composition.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising restricting or permitting flow of the treated pharmaceutical composition to one of a waste drain and a waste container based on the determined characteristics of the treated pharmaceutical composition.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein separating the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises filtering at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein chemically treating the extracted pharmaceutical composition comprises deactivating the extracted pharmaceutical composition, denaturing the extracted pharmaceutical composition, oxidizing the extracted pharmaceutical composition, and combinations thereof.

18. The method of claim 13 further comprising treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition with a light source configured to deactivate and/or denature any pharmaceutical drugs from the residual pharmaceutical composition.

19. A method of disposing of a residual pharmaceutical composition from an IV bag, the method comprising:

coupling the IV bag to a pharmaceutical dispenser coupler;

extracting at least a portion of the residual pharmaceutical composition from the IV bag through the pharmaceutical dispenser coupler;

treating at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition in one of a chemical and physical manner; and

analyzing at least a portion of the extracted pharmaceutical composition to determine a characteristic of the extracted pharmaceutical composition.
