Abstract

This invention relates to an apparatus for conducting immunoassay test. The apparatus includes a groove unit having a groove along a vertical direction configured to hold a rod-shaped portion of a probe along the vertical direction, and a push pin configured to move along a horizontal direction, the push pin being capable of residing at a first position and a second position. A tip of the push pin is capable of pressing the rod-shaped portion of the probe against the groove when the push pin resides at the first position. The distance between the tip of the push pin and the groove is larger than a diameter of the rod-shaped portion of the probe when the push pin resides at the second position.

Claims (44)

1. A method for conducting an immunoassay test, the method comprising:

obtaining a cartridge that includes—

a sample well that contains a sample,

a reagent well that contains a reagent,

a first wash well that contains a first aqueous solution,

a second wash well that contains a second aqueous solution, and

a measurement well in which light is shone for optical reading during the immunoassay test; and

loading a probe into the sample well, the first wash well, the reagent well, the second wash well, and the measurement well in succession,

wherein said loading is performed such that a bottom tip of the probe that is coated with analyte-binding molecules is immersed in the sample, the first aqueous solution, the reagent, and the second aqueous solution before being exposed to the light.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the probe includes (i) a rod-shaped section and (ii) a cushioning component located in a central portion of the rod-shaped section, such that an upper portion of the rod-shaped section extends from a top side of the cushioning component and a lower portion of the rod-shaped section extends from a bottom side of the cushioning component.

The method of claim 2 , wherein when the probe is loaded into the sample well, the first wash well, the reagent well, the second wash well, and the measurement well in succession, the cushioning component supports the rod-shaped section such that the bottom tip of the lower portion of the rod-shaped section is suspended in those wells while the upper portion of the rod-shaped section extends above those wells.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the cartridge further includes—

a probe well in which to receive the lower portion of the rod-shaped section of the probe, and

a cap that is pivotably connected to the cartridge, so as to be foldable over the probe well to enclose the upper portion of the rod-shaped section of the probe.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the probe is vertically stored inside the probe well with the bottom tip suspended therein when the cap is in a closed position.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

opening the cap so as to expose the upper portion of the rod-shaped section of the probe; and

removing the probe from the probe well by grasping the probe along the upper portion of the rod-shaped section.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the measurement well has a light-transmissive bottom that is used for optical reading of the bottom tip of the probe during the immunoassay test.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge further includes—

a plurality of reconstitution wells that contain a buffer.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

transferring the buffer to the sample well and the reagent well from respective reconstitution wells of the plurality of reconstitution wells.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transferring the sample to the sample well from a sample tube in which a larger volume of the sample is stored.

11. A cartridge for an immunoassay test, the cartridge comprising:

a probe well in which a first portion of a probe is suspended;

a cap that is pivotably connected to the cartridge, so as to be foldable over the probe well to enclose a second portion of the probe that extends above the probe well;

a sample well in which to receive a sample;

a reagent well in which to receive a reagent;

a plurality of wash wells in which to receive aqueous solutions; and

a measurement well in which light is shone for optical reading during the immunoassay test.

12. The cartridge of claim 11 ,

wherein the probe has a bottom tip that is coated with analyte-binding molecules, and

wherein over the course of the immunoassay test, the bottom tip is immersed in the sample, the reagent, and the aqueous solutions.

13. The cartridge of claim 12 , wherein the measurement well has a light-transmissive bottom that is used for optical reading of the bottom tip of the probe during the immunoassay test.

14. The cartridge of claim 11 , wherein openings of the sample well, the reagent well, the plurality of wash wells, and the measurement well are sealed.

15. The cartridge of claim 11 , wherein when the cap is folded over the probe well to enclose the second portion of the probe, the cap does not cover the sample well, the reagent well, the plurality of wash wells, or the measurement well.

16. The cartridge of claim 11 , wherein the reagent is a dry reagent.

17. The cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising:

a reconstitution well in which to receive a buffer for reconstituting the dry reagent.

18. The cartridge of claim 11 , wherein the reagent well is one of a pair of reagent wells, and wherein a different reagent is stored in each reagent well of the pair of reagent wells.

19. The cartridge of claim 18 , wherein the reagent well contain antibody molecules conjugated with a first member of a binding pair, and wherein another reagent well of the pair of reagent wells includes a second member of the binding pair that is labeled with reporter molecules.

20. The cartridge of claim 19 , wherein the reporter molecules are suitable for fluorescent or chemiluminescent labeling.
