Abstract

A tool including a tool surface and further including coding indicia linked, at least indirectly, with the surface of the tool, the coding indicia capable of being detected by a sensor, the coding indicia functioning as a pointer to information relating to said tool or its use.

Claims (33)

1. A tool comprising:

a tool having a surface;

a driven gear having a surface; and

coding indicia linked with the surface of the tool and with the surface of the driven gear, the coding indicia capable of being detected by a sensor, the coding indicia functioning as a pointer to information relating to the tool or its use.

2. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the tool includes an over-molded portion.

3. The tool of claim 2 , wherein the over-molded portion includes a surface and the coding indicia is linked with the surface of the over-molded portion.

4. The tool of claim 3 , wherein the coding indicia is linked to both the surface of the tool and the surface of the over-molded portion.

5. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the coding indicia includes at least one of a dye, ink, paint, marking, or a pattern of detectable irregularities.

6. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the tool includes a rotatable cutter.

7. A machine for controlling the tool of claim 1 , the machine including:

the sensor for detecting the coding indicia; and

a computer for extracting information from the coding indicia relevant to the tool or its use,

wherein the computer is configured to modify a state of the machine based on the information extracted from the coding indicia.

8. A tool comprising:

a housing having a radially outward surface, wherein the radially outward surface comprises a non-rounded flat surface portion and a round surface portion; and

coding indicia linked with the radially outward surface of the housing, the coding indicia capable of being detected by a sensor, the coding indicia functioning as a pointer to information relating to the tool or its use.

9. The tool of claim 8 , wherein the non-rounded flat surface portion and the rounded surface portion form a circumferential band of the housing of the tool.

10. The tool of claim 9 , wherein:

the tool includes a cutting tool comprising a blade retained by the housing; and

the non-rounded flat surface portion of the circumferential band of the surface is fixed relative to an orientation of the blade,

wherein the sensor is configured to detect the coding indicia from the surface based on the orientation of the blade.

11. The tool of claim 9 , wherein the coding indicia comprises a length of the non-rounded flat surface portion of the circumferential band of the surface.

12. The tool of claim 11 , wherein the length of the non-rounded flat surface portion of the circumferential band of the surface comprises a distance between edge portions of the non-rounded flat surface portion where the non-rounded flat surface portion transitions to the rounded flat surface portion.

13. The tool of claim 9 , wherein:

the rounded surface portion is one of a plurality of rounded surface portions;

the non-rounded flat surface portion is one of a plurality of non-rounded flat surface portions; and

the coding indicia is based a pattern of the plurality of rounded surface portions and the plurality of non-rounded flat surface portions of the circumferential band of the surface.

14. A tool comprising:

a housing configured to hold a cutting implement, wherein the housing comprises a radially outward surface, the radially outward surface comprising a rounded surface portion and a non-rounded flat surface portion; and

coding indicia linked with the radially outward surface of the housing, the coding indicia capable of being detected by a sensor, the coding indicia functioning as an indicator relating to the tool or its use.

15. The tool of claim 14 , wherein the coding indicia comprises a length of the non-rounded flat surface portion of the surface.

16. The tool of claim 15 , wherein the length of the non-rounded flat surface portion of the surface comprises a distance between edge portions of the non-rounded flat surface portion where the non-rounded flat surface portion transitions to the rounded surface portion.

17. A machine comprising the tool of claim 14 , wherein the machine further comprises a sensor aligned in signal-receiving communication with a circumferential band of the radially outward surface of the tool that includes the non-rounded flat surface portion and the rounded surface portion, wherein the sensor is configured to detect a signal from the non-rounded flat surface portion of the circumferential band of the surface of the tool.
