Abstract

A method for operating a medical device, comprising: (1) providing a surgical end effector at a distal end of an instrument shaft and a rotating actuator at a proximal end of the instrument shaft, and (2) operating the rotating actuator to perform at least one of actuating the surgical end effector by sliding the rotating actuator in a proximal direction and rotating the surgical end effector with respect to the instrument shaft and about a shaft axis.

Claims (39)

1. A method for operating a medical device, comprising:

providing:

a handle at a proximal end of an instrument shaft comprising:

a shaft axis;

a distal end; and

a passive articulation joint at the distal end of the instrument shaft;

a surgical end effector articulatingly connected to the passive articulation joint, the surgical end effector comprising an articulation lock operable to selectively lock and unlock articulation of the passive articulation joint; and

a rotating actuator at the proximal end of the instrument shaft; and

operating the rotating actuator to simultaneously:

release the articulation lock of the surgical end effector by sliding the rotating actuator in a proximal direction to allow passive articulation about the passive articulation joint; and

rotate the surgical end effector, the passive articulation joint, and the instrument shaft about the shaft axis by rotating the rotating actuator.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the surgical end effector is rotationally fixedly connected to the rotating actuator.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of actuating the surgical end effector further comprises actuating a procedure actuator at the surgical end effector.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the procedure actuator is a stapling actuator.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein:

the articulation lock has an unlocked state and a locked state; and

releasing of the rotating actuator changes the articulation lock from the unlocked state to the locked state.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein releasing of the rotating actuator causes the rotating actuator to revert back in a distal direction.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the surgical end effector comprises a stapling end effector having a pair of opposing stapling surfaces operable to apply a tissue compressive force to tissue.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the surgical end effector further comprises a knife assembly.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the surgical end effector comprises a stapling end effector having a stapling device with staples and a cutting device with a blade.

10. A method for operating a medical device, comprising:

providing:

a handle at a proximal end of an instrument shaft having a shaft axis;

a surgical end effector at a distal end of the instrument shaft, the surgical end effector comprising a passive articulation joint with an articulation lock; and

a rotating actuator at a distal end of the handle, the rotating actuator configured to move from a rest position proximally to a retracted position and to return from the retracted position distally to the rest position;

operating the rotating actuator:

to release the articulation lock of the surgical end effector by sliding the rotating actuator in a proximal direction at least to the retracted position to allow passive articulation about the passive articulation joint; and

to rotate the surgical end effector, the passive articulation joint, and the instrument shaft about the shaft axis by rotating the rotating actuator.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the surgical end effector is rotationally fixedly connected to the rotating actuator.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the step of actuating the surgical end effector further comprises actuating a procedure actuator at the surgical end effector.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the procedure actuator is a stapling actuator.

14. The method according to claim 10 , wherein:

the articulation lock has an unlocked state and a locked state; and

releasing of the rotating actuator changes the articulation lock from the unlocked state to the locked state.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein releasing of the rotating actuator causes the rotating actuator to revert back in a distal direction.

16. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the rotating actuator permits simultaneous rotation and release of the articulation lock when rotated about the shaft axis and slid proximally.

17. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the surgical end effector comprises a stapling end effector having a pair of opposing stapling surfaces operable to apply a tissue compressive force to tissue.

18. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the surgical end effector comprises a stapling end effector having a stapling device with staples and a cutting device with a blade.
