Oral dissolvable film that includes plant extract
Films (ODFs) that include botanical extract are provided, as well as methods of making and using the same.
1. An oral dissolvable film having a mass of about 100 mg and a thickness of up to about 20 mm, the oral dissolvable film comprising:
(a) about 2-24 wt. % of water,
(b) about 40-50 wt. % of binder comprising at least one of pectin and microcrystalline cellulose,
(c) about 0.1-22 wt. % of lipid comprising at least one of cocoa butter and lecithin,
(d) about 3-22 wt. % of emulsifier comprising glycerin,
(e) at least about 30 wt. % of cannabis extract,
(f) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 10 wt. % of flavoring agent comprising at least one of mint flavoring, spearmint flavoring, and peppermint flavoring, and
(g) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 40 wt. % of sweetener comprising at least one of sucralose and acesulfame potassium, wherein at least about 10 wt. % of the cannabis extract is encapsulated by the lipid.
2. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 wherein the cannabis extract comprises at least one of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabidiol (CBD).
3. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , comprising one or more cannabinoids, each present in an amount of about 0.01-60 mg.
4. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , comprising one or more cannabinoids, each present in an amount of about 0.1-50 mg.
5. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , comprising one or more cannabinoids, each present in an amount of about 0.5-40 mg.
6. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein the oral dissolvable film comprises:
less than about 1 wt. % plant waxes,
less than about 1 wt. % plant lipids,
less than about 1 wt. % plant pigments, and
less than about 1 wt. % chlorophylls.
7. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein the cannabis extract is present in at least about 35 wt. % of the oral dissolvable film.
8. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , configured and formulated for the immediate release (IR) of the cannabinoid.
9. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , configured and formulated for the sustained release (SR), delayed release (DR), modified release (MR), extended release (XR), or controlled release (CR) of the cannabinoid.
10. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein the binder comprises genu pectin.
11. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein at least about 25 wt. % of the cannabis extract is encapsulated by the lipid.
12. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein at least about 50 wt. % of the cannabis extract is encapsulated by the lipid.
13. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein the oral dissolvable film has a rapid dissolution of about 30 - 300 seconds when placed in the oral cavity.
14. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising an absorption enhancer.
15. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , wherein the powder coating comprises at least one of microcrystalline cellulose, mint flavoring, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.
16. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising a dough conditioner comprising at least one of ethoxylated monoglycerides and ethoxylated diglycerides.
17. An oral dissolvable film having a mass of about 100 mg and a thickness of up to about 20 mm, the oral dissolvable film comprising:
(a) about 2-24 wt. % of water,
(b) about 40-50 wt. % of binder comprising at least one of pectin and microcrystalline cellulose,
(c) about 0.1-22 wt. % of lipid comprising at least one of cocoa butter and lecithin,
(d) about 3-22 wt. % of emulsifier comprising glycerin,
(e) at least about 30 wt. % of cannabis extract,
(f) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 10 wt. % of flavoring agent comprising at least one of mint flavoring, spearmint flavoring, and peppermint flavoring,
(g) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 40 wt. % of sweetener comprising at least one of sucralose and acesulfame potassium,
(h) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 1.0 wt. % of dye or pigment comprising at least one of FD&C red, FD&C blue, and FD&C yellow,
(i) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 20 wt. % of powder coating on at least one external surface of the oral dissolvable film, wherein each powder coating independently comprises at least one of talc, microcrystalline cellulose, powdered flavoring agent, powdered sweetener, and powdered tapioca starch; and
(j) greater than about 0 wt. % to about 2.0 wt. % of preservative comprising at least one of at least one of sodium benzoate, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and sodium sorbate; wherein,
the oral dissolvable film comprises less than about 1 wt. % plant waxes,
the oral dissolvable film comprises less than about 1 wt. % plant lipids,
the oral dissolvable film comprises less than about 1 wt. % plant pigments, and
the oral dissolvable film comprises less than about 1 wt. % chlorophylls, wherein at least about 10 wt. % of the cannabis extract is encapsulated by the lipid.
18. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , wherein the cannabis extract comprises at least one of, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabidiol (CBD).
19. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , wherein the cannabis extract is present in at least about 35 wt. % of the oral dissolvable film.
20. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , wherein the oral dissolvable film has a rapid dissolution of about 30-300 seconds when placed in the oral cavity.
21. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , further comprising an absorption enhancer.
22. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , wherein the powder coating comprises at least one of microcrystalline cellulose, mint flavoring, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.
23. The oral dissolvable film of claim 17 , comprising one or more cannabinoids, each present in an amount of about 0.01-60 mg.
24. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising greater than about 0 wt. % to about 20 wt. % of powder coating on at least one external surface of the oral dissolvable film, wherein the powder coating comprises at least one of microcrystalline cellulose, mint flavoring, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and tapioca starch.

The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising greater than about 0 wt. % to about 20 wt. % of powder coating on at least one external surface of the oral dissolvable film, wherein the powder coating comprises at least one of talc, microcrystalline cellulose, powdered flavoring agent, powdered sweetener, and powdered tapioca starch.
26. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising greater than about 0 wt. % to about 2.0 wt. % of preservative, wherein the preservative comprises at least one of at least one of sodium benzoate, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, and sodium sorbate.
27. The oral dissolvable film of claim 1 , further comprising greater than about 0 wt. % to about 1.0 wt. % of dye or pigment, wherein the dye or pigment comprises at least one of FD&C red, FD&C blue, and FD&C yellow.
