Abstract

A passive valve for use as a fixed leak valve. The valve includes a body having an internal chamber, first and second body ports in fluid communication with the chamber with the first port configured for fluid communication with a patient connection and the second body port configured for fluid communication with a ventilator, a body passageway in fluid communication with the chamber and with ambient air exterior of the body, and a check valve seal positioned to seal the body passageway to permit the flow of gas within the chamber through the body passageway to the exterior of the body and to prevent the flow of ambient air exterior of the body through the body passageway into the chamber. In alternative embodiments, the valve is incorporated into the patient connection or constructed as a separate part connectable to the patient connection.

Claims (29)

1. A ventilator operable in a ventilation mode that provides a breath having an inspiration phase and an exhalation phase, and a cough-assist mode that provides a cough having an insufflation phase and an exsufflation phase, the ventilator comprising:

one or more ventilator connections to which a patient circuit is connectable for fluid communication therewith;

a blower having an inlet and an outlet, the blower being configured to move gases from the inlet to the outlet;

a cough-assist feature coupled to the blower, the cough-assist feature being configured to move between (a) a first position that fluidically connects the outlet of the blower to at least one of the one or more ventilator connections, and (b) a second position that fluidically connects the inlet of the blower to at least one of the one or more ventilator connections; and

a controller configured to:

control a position of the cough-assist feature such that the cough-assist feature is in the first position during the inspiration phase of the breath and the second position during the exsufflation phase of the cough, and

control a speed of the blower to provide a desired pressure and/or flow during the inspiration phase and the exhalation phase of the breath and the insufflation phase and the exsufflation phase of the cough.

2. The ventilator of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to increase the speed of the blower during the exsufflation phase of the cough.

3. The ventilator of claim 2 wherein the controller is configured to increase the speed of the of blower at the same time the controller instructs the cough-assist feature to transition from the first position to the second position.

4. The ventilator of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to continuously control the speed of the blower.

5. The ventilator of claim 1 , further comprising a pressure sensor configured to measure a pressure between the one or more ventilator connections and the blower, wherein the controller is configured to control the speed of the blower based at least in part on the measured pressure.

6. The ventilator of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to control the position of the cough-assist feature such that the cough-assist feature is in the first position during the exhalation phase of the breath and the insufflation phase of the cough.

7. The ventilator of claim 1 further comprising a user input for selectively switching operation of the ventilator from the ventilation mode to the cough-assist mode.

8. The ventilator of claim 1 wherein the cough-assist feature is a valve.

9. The ventilator of claim 1 wherein the ventilator is a portable ventilator having a housing, wherein the blower and the cough-assist feature are positioned within the housing.

10. A respiratory therapy system operable in a ventilation mode that provides a breath having an inspiration phase and an exhalation phase, and a cough-assist mode that provides a cough having an insufflation phase and an exsufflation phase, the respiratory therapy system comprising:

a patient circuit;

a ventilator, the ventilator including:

a blower having an inlet and an outlet, the blower being configured to move gases from the inlet to the outlet, and

a cough-assist feature coupled to the blower, the cough-assist feature being configured to move between (a) a first position that fluidically connects the outlet of the blower to the patient circuit, and (b) a second position that fluidically connects the inlet of the blower to the patient circuit; and

a controller configured to:

control a position of the cough-assist feature such that the cough-assist feature is in the first position during the inspiration phase of the breath and the second position during the exsufflation phase of the cough, and

control a speed of the blower to achieve a target pressure and/or flow in the patient circuit during the inspiration phase and the exhalation phase of the breath and during the insufflation phase and the exsufflation phase of the cough.

11. The respiratory therapy system of claim 10 wherein the patient circuit extends between the ventilator and a patient connection, and wherein gases flow along a common length of the patient circuit during both the ventilation mode and the cough-assist mode.

12. The respiratory therapy system of claim 10 , further comprising a pressure sensor configured to measure a pressure in the ventilator, wherein the controller is configured to control the speed of the blower based at least in part on the measured pressure.

13. The respiratory therapy system of claim 12 wherein the measured pressure is indicative of a pressure in the patient circuit.

14. The respiratory therapy system of claim 10 wherein the controller is configured to increase the speed of the blower during the exsufflation phase of the cough.

15. The respiratory therapy system of claim 14 wherein the controller is configured to increase the speed of the of blower at the same time the controller instructs the cough-assist feature to transition from the first position to the second position.

16. The respiratory therapy system of claim 10 wherein the controller is configured to continuously control the speed of the blower.
