Abstract

Content delivery and playback methods and apparatus are described. The methods and apparatus are well suited for delivery and playback of content corresponding to a 360 degree environment and can be used to support streaming and/or real time delivery of 3D content corresponding to an event, e.g., while the event is ongoing or after the event is over. Portions of the environment are captured by cameras located at different positions. The content captured from different locations is encoded and made available for delivery. A playback device selects the content to be received based in a user's head position.

Claims (34)

1. A method of operating a content delivery system, comprising:

identifying a plurality of content streams each captured from a different camera of a plurality of cameras each having a different viewing direction, wherein the plurality of cameras are located at a single camera position, such that each content stream comprises a unique portion of the environment from the camera position;

obtaining, from a playback system including a head mounted display, a selection of one or more particular content streams from the plurality of content streams, wherein the playback system performs the selection based on a viewing direction of a user of the head mounted display; and

transmitting the one or more particular content streams to the playback system in accordance with the selection;

wherein content included in at least one of the one or more particular content streams is configured for playback.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of the one or more particular content streams comprises prioritized content streams based on the viewing direction of the user.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the prioritized content streams comprise viewing directions within a scene corresponding to a current field of view of the user based on a size of portions of the field of view that each content stream provides.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

controlling streaming of image content, the image content comprising a plurality of portions of a stereoscopic scene.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

transmitting the one or more particular content streams to the playback system periodically in accordance with a time interval.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

receiving a request for imaging content from the playback system, the request for imaging content comprising identification information corresponding to the playback system.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the request for imaging content further comprises an indication for at least one data rate supported by the playback system and information indicating a current viewing direction of the user.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting information regarding the plurality of content streams as part of a program guide.

9. A content delivery system, comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting content streams; and

a processor configured to:

identify a plurality of content streams each captured from a different camera of a plurality of cameras each having a different viewing direction, wherein the plurality of cameras are located at a single camera position, such that each content stream comprises a unique portion of the environment from the camera position;

obtain, from a playback system including a head mounted display, a selection of one or more particular content streams from the plurality of content streams, wherein the playback system performs the selection based on a viewing direction of a user of the head mounted display; and

transmit the one or more particular content streams to the playback system in accordance with the selection;

wherein content included in at least one of the one or more particular content streams is configured for playback.

10. The content delivery system of claim 9 , wherein the selection of the one or more particular content streams comprises prioritized content streams based on the viewing direction of the user.

11. The content delivery system of claim 10 , wherein the prioritized content streams comprise viewing directions within a scene corresponding to a current field of view of the user based on a size of portions of the field of view that each content stream provides.

12. The content delivery system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

control streaming of image content, the image content comprising a plurality of portions of a stereoscopic scene.

13. The content delivery system of claim 12 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to:

transmit the one or more particular content streams to the playback system periodically in accordance with a time interval.

14. The content delivery system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a receiver that receives a request for imaging content from the playback system, the request for imaging content comprising identification information corresponding to the playback system.

15. The content delivery system of claim 14 , wherein the request for imaging content further comprises an indication for at least one data rate supported by the playback system and information indicating a current viewing direction of the user.

16. The content delivery system of claim 9 , wherein the transmitter is further configured to:

transmit information regarding the plurality of content streams as part of a program guide.
