Abstract

Infusion fluid is flowed through a fluid delivery line of an infusion system. Optical signals having different wavelengths are transmitted through the fluid delivery line. The transmitted optical signals having the different wavelengths are received. At least one processor determines whether air or infusion fluid is disposed in the fluid delivery line based on the received optical signals having the different wavelengths.

Claims (24)

1. An infusion system comprising:

a first beam splitter configured to direct a first optical signal through a predetermined path across a fluid delivery line and further direct a second optical signal through the predetermined path across the fluid delivery line, wherein the first and the second optical signals are generated by separate optical transmitters;

a second beam splitter configured to receive the first optical signal the second optical signal after the first and the second optical signals have traversed the predetermined path across the fluid delivery line;

a first receiver configured to receive the first optical signal from the second beam splitter; and

a second receiver configured to receive the second optical signal from the second beam splitter.

2. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical signal comprises a first wavelength and the second optical signal comprises a second wavelength different from the first wavelength.

3. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical signal is transmitted at an offset from the second optical signal.

4. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein a determination of air in the fluid delivery line is based on a ratio of the first optical signal and the second optical signal.

5. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the separate optical transmitters are modulated at a frequency greater than 666 Hz.

6. The infusion system of claim 5 , wherein the separate optical transmitters are modulated at a frequency greater than 1 Mhz.

7. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein a determination of air in the fluid delivery line does not require calibration.

8. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical signal is modulated.

9. The infusion system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical signal and the second optical signal have varying wavelengths in a range between 940 nm and 1050 nm.

10. An infusion system comprising:

a first beam splitter configured to direct a first optical signal through a predetermined path across a fluid delivery line and further direct a second optical signal through the predetermined path across the fluid delivery line, wherein the first and the second optical signals are generated by separate optical transmitters; and

a second beam splitter configured to receive the first optical signal the second optical signal after the first and the second optical signals have traversed the predetermined path across the fluid delivery line, wherein the second beam splitter is configured to transmit the first optical signal to a first receiver and the second optical signal to a second receiver.

11. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein the first optical signal comprises a first wavelength and the second optical signal comprises a second wavelength different from the first wavelength.

12. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein the first optical signal is transmitted at an offset from the second optical signal.

13. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein a determination of air in the fluid delivery line is based on a ratio of the first optical signal and the second optical signal.

14. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein the separate optical transmitters are modulated at a frequency greater than 666 Hz.

15. The infusion system of claim 14 , wherein the separate optical transmitters are modulated at a frequency greater than 1 Mhz.

16. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein a determination of air in the fluid delivery line does not require calibration.

17. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein the first optical signal is modulated.

18. The infusion system of claim 10 , wherein the first optical signal and the second optical signal have varying wavelengths in a range between 940 nm and 1050 nm.
