Abstract

A method for locating electrical activity in a patient comprising the steps of (1) obtaining a sensing patch having a plurality of fiducial markers compatible with an imaging system and a plurality of sensors adapted to collect electrical signals found on a surface of the patient's skin, (2) securing the sensing patch to the patient with a position relative to a heart of the patient, (3) operating the imaging system to obtain an image of the heart of the patient and at least one of the plurality of fiducial markers, and (4) creating an electric field map corresponding the heart of the patient.

Claims (52)

1 . A method for locating electrical activity in a patient comprising the steps of:

obtaining a sensing patch having a plurality of fiducial markers compatible with an imaging system and a plurality of sensors adapted to collect electrical signals found on a surface of the patient's skin;

securing the sensing patch to the patient with a position relative to a heart of the patient;

operating the imaging system to obtain an image of the heart of the patient and at least one of the plurality of fiducial markers; and

creating an electric field map corresponding the heart of the patient.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing the plurality of sensors from the sensing patch prior to operating the imaging system.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the image is a sonogram.

4 . The method of claim 3 further comprising the step of determining an angle of an ultrasound probe of the imaging system.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of fiducial markers comprises a row of fiducial markers and a column of fiducial markers.

6 . The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of:

correlating a first measurement of a first fiducial marker in the row of fiducial markers and a second measurement of a second fiducial marker in the column of fiducial markers to a specific point on the sensing patch.

7 . The method of claim 5 wherein the sensing patch further comprises a plurality of magnets, each of the plurality of magnets is associated with one of the plurality of sensors, and there is a known physical relationship between the first fiducial marker, the second fiducial marker, each of the plurality of magnets, and each of the plurality of sensors, and further comprising the step of utilizing the known relationship to determine the location of a foci in the heart of the patient.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the electrical signals correspond to magnetic fields.

9 . The method of claim 7 wherein the plurality of sensors comprise:

a first sensor adapted to measure a first magnetic field in a first direction; and

a second sensor adapted to measure a second magnetic field in a second direction.

10 . The method of claim 8 wherein the first direction is orthogonal to the second direction.

11 . The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of calculating a difference between a first magnetic field measured by a first sensor and a second magnetic field measured by a second sensor.

12 . The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of graphically depicting the difference.

13 . The method of claim 1 wherein the sensing patch further comprises a plurality of magnets.

14 . The method of claim 12 wherein each of the plurality of magnets is associated with one of the plurality of sensors.

15 . The method of claim 13 further comprising the step of measuring an electric field of each magnet and utilizing the measured electric field values to create the electric field map.

16 . The method of claim 1 wherein the map is a three-dimensional map.

17 . The method of claim 1 wherein the map is a map of the heart of the patient.

18 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of securing a second sensing patch having a second plurality of fiducial markers compatible with the imaging system and second plurality of sensors adapted to collect electrical signals found on the surface of the patient's skin to the patient.

19 . A method for locating electrical activity in a patient comprising the steps of:

obtaining a sensing patch comprising:

a row of fiducial markers compatible with an imaging system,

a column of fiducial markers compatible with the imaging system,

a first sensor adapted to measure an electrical signal associated with a first magnetic field in a first direction,

a second sensor adapted to measure an electrical signal associated with a second magnetic field in a second direction, which is orthogonal to the first direction,

a first magnet associated with the first sensor, and

a second magnet associated with the second sensor;

securing the sensing patch to the patient with a position relative to a heart of the patient;

operating the imaging system to obtain an image of the heart of the patient, at least one of the rows of fiducial markers, and at least one of the columns of fiducial markers;

correlating a first measurement of a first fiducial marker in the row of fiducial markers and a second measurement of a second fiducial marker in the column of fiducial markers to a specific point on the sensing patch;

measuring the first magnetic field of the first magnet;

measuring the second magnetic field of the second magnet;

calculating a difference between the first magnetic field and the second magnetic field; and

creating a three-dimensional electric field map of the heart of the patient, which graphically depicts the difference.

20 . A method for locating electrical activity in a patient comprising the steps of:

obtaining a sensing patch comprising:

a plurality of rows of fiducial markers compatible with an imaging system,

a plurality of columns of fiducial markers compatible with the imaging system,

a first plurality of sensors adapted to measure an electrical signal, and

a plurality of magnets wherein each of the plurality of magnets are associated with one of the plurality of sensors;

securing the sensing patch to the patient with a position relative to a heart of the patient;

removing the plurality of sensors from the sensing patch prior to operating the imaging system;

operating the imaging system to obtain an image of the heart of the patient and at least one of the fiducial markers;

correlating a first measurement of a first fiducial marker in the plurality of rows of fiducial markers and a second measurement of a second fiducial marker in the plurality of columns of fiducial markers to a specific point on the sensing patch;

measuring an electric field of each magnet; and

utilizing the measured electric fields to create an electric field map corresponding the heart of the patient.
