Abstract

Methods, systems, and non-transitory computer readable storage media are disclosed for generating a customized organizational structure prior to uploading content items to a remote storage. For example, in one or more embodiments, the disclosed system identifies a set of content items to host on a remote storage and generates a visual representation of an organizational structure to be used for the content items at the remote storage. The system detects interactions modifying the organizational structure and provides the customized organizational structure to the remote storage prior to transmitting the content items. The system then transmits the set of content items to the remote storage in response to a transmission initiation event, and the remote storage stores the content items according to the customized organizational structure. In one or more embodiments, the system also allows the organizational structure and uploading of content items to be performed using different applications.

Claims (59)

1. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing device to:

identify a user selection of content items to store at a content management system;

determine a custom organizational structure of the content items via a web-based online interface prior to providing the content items to the content management system, the custom organizational structure comprising placeholder icons pointing to the content items stored at the computing device within a visual representation of an organizational structure of the content items via the web-based online interface and indicating a custom file hierarchy for the content items at the content management system different than a local organizational structure comprising an initial file hierarchy of the content items on the computing device;

initiate upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein uploading the content items causes the content management system to generate the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure and store the content items at one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure;

detect an interruption during the upload of the content items to the content management system;

receive, after detecting the interruption, a request to resume the upload of the content items to the content management system; and

in response to receiving the request to resume the upload, resuming the upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein resuming the upload of the content items causes the content management system to store the content items at the one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure previously provided to the content management system.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , wherein identifying the user selection of the content items to store at the content management system comprises identifying a drag-and-drop operation to insert the content items from a file manager application on a client device into a web-based application.

3. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine that one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based online interface;

provide, for display on a display device, a notification that the one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based online interface; and

receive a request to switch to a standalone application interface to upload the content items to the content management system.

4. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

generate metadata representing the custom organizational structure of the content items; and

provide, to the content management system, the metadata prior to initiating the upload of the content items to the content management system.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , wherein determining the custom organizational structure of the content items via the web-based online interface comprises receiving one or more user interactions modifying a location of a content item with respect to the local organizational structure of the content items.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to generate, and provide to the content management system, metadata representing the custom organizational structure of the content items.

7. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

determine a modification to the custom organizational structure;

generate metadata to represent the custom organizational structure with the modification;

and provide the metadata representing the custom organizational structure with the modification to the content management system.

8. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine a user-defined custom organizational structure of content items to store at a content management system prior to providing the content items to the content management system, the custom organizational structure comprising placeholder icons pointing to the content items stored at a computing device within a visual representation of an organizational structure of the content items and indicating a custom file hierarchy for the content items at the content management system different than an original organizational structure comprising an initial file hierarchy of the content items on the computing device;

initiate upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein uploading the content items causes the content management system to generate the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure and store the content items at one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure;

detect an interruption during the upload of the content items to the content management system; and

after detecting the interruption, resuming the upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein resuming the upload of the content items causes the content management system to store the content items at the one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure.

The system as recited in claim 8 , wherein determining the custom organizational structure of the content items to store at the content management system comprises identifying a drag-and-drop operation to organize the content items from a file manager application on a client device into a web-based application.

10. The system as recited in claim 9 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine that one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based application;

provide a notification that the one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based application; and

receive a request to switch to a standalone application to upload the content items to the content management system.

11. The system as recited in claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

generate metadata representing the custom organizational structure of the content items; and

provide, to the content management system, prior to initiating the upload of the content items, the metadata representing the custom organizational structure of the content items.

12. The system as recited in claim 8 , wherein determining the custom organizational structure of the content items comprises receiving one or more user interactions modifying a location of a content item with respect to the original organizational structure of the content items.

13. The system as recited in claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive a modification to the custom organizational structure;

generate metadata to represent the custom organizational structure with the modification; and

provide the metadata representing the custom organizational structure with the modification to the content management system.

14. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein receiving the modification to the custom organizational structure of the content items comprises detecting a user interaction to add, move, or delete a content item within the custom organizational structure.

15. A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining a user-defined custom organizational structure of content items to store at a content management system prior to providing the content items to the content management system, the custom organizational structure comprising placeholder icons pointing to the content items stored at a computing device within a visual representation of an organizational structure of the content items and indicating a custom file hierarchy for the content items at the content management system different than an original organizational structure comprising an initial file hierarchy of the content items on the computing device;

providing, to the content management system, metadata representing the custom organizational structure;

initiating upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein uploading the content items causes the content management system to generate the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure and store the content items at one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure;

detect an interruption during the upload of the content items to the content management system; and

after detecting the interruption, resuming the upload of the content items to the content management system, wherein resuming the upload of the content items causes the content management system to store the content items at the one or more storage devices of the content management system according to the custom file hierarchy of the custom organizational structure represented in the previously provided metadata.

The computer-implemented method recited in claim 15 , wherein identifying the custom organizational structure of the content items to store at the content management system comprises identifying a drag-and-drop operation to organize the content items from a file manager application on a client device into a web-based application.

17. The computer-implemented method recited in claim 16 , further comprising:

determining that one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based application;

provide a notification that the one or more content items of the content items cannot be uploaded via the web-based application; and

receive a request to switch to a standalone application to upload the content items to the content management system.

18. The computer-implemented method recited in claim 15 , wherein determining the custom organizational structure of the content items comprises receiving one or more user interactions modifying a location of a content item with respect to the original organizational structure of the content items.

19. The computer-implemented method recited in claim 15 , further comprising:

receive a modification to the custom organizational structure;

generate metadata to represent the custom organizational structure with the modification;

and provide the metadata representing the custom organizational structure with the modification to the content management system.

20. The computer-implemented method recited in claim 19 , wherein receiving the modification to the custom organizational structure of the content items comprises detecting a user interaction to add, move, or delete a content item within the custom organizational structure.
