Abstract

In response to a detected presence of an intended target appliance within a logical topography of controllable appliances identity information associated with the intended target appliance is used to automatically add to a graphical user interface of a controlling device an icon representative of the intended target appliance and to create at a Universal Control Engine a listing of communication methods for use in controlling corresponding functional operations of the intended target appliance. When the icon is later activated, the controlling device is placed into an operating state appropriate for controlling functional operations of the intended target appliance while the Universal Control Engine uses at least one of the communication methods to transmit at least one command to place the intended target appliance into a predetermined operating state.

Claims (18)

1. A first device that is controlled by control signals provided over a network, the first device comprising: at least one network interface configured to receive the control signals; at least one memory configured to store program instructions for universal control engine (UCE) operations; and at least one processor configured to access the at least one memory and to execute the program instructions, the program instructions comprising: communicator instructions configured to receive a control signal of the control signals for a control function via the network interface, the control function being applicable to a second device; and controller instructions configured to determine the control function is directed to the second device, the second device being controllable by an associated remote controller; the communicator instructions being further configured to transmit a different control signal, for the control function, from the first device to the second device, thereby permitting the second device to be controlled via the received control signal without inputs from the associated remote controller.

2. The first device of claim 1 , wherein the control signals are provided over the network using an Internet Protocol (IP) communication format and the associated remote controller utilizes a different type of communication format.

3. The first device of claim 2 , wherein the network comprises at least one of a home network, a local area network, or the Internet.

4. The first device claim 1 , wherein the control signal is originated from, and provided via the network by, at least one of a personal computing device or a smart phone.

The first device of claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises an audio/visual (A/V) device, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the controller instructions are further configured to generate the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.

The first device of claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) switch, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the controller instructions are further configured to generate the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.

A method comprising: receiving, at a first device that is controlled by control signals provided over a network, a control signal of the control signals for a control function via a network interface, the control function being applicable to a second device; determining, at the first device via use of universal control engine (UCE) instructions executed at the first device, that the control function is directed to the second device, the second device being controllable by an associated remote controller; and transmitting a different control signal, for the control function, from the first device to the second device, thereby permitting the second device to be controlled via the received control signal without inputs from the associated remote controller.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the control signals are provided over the network using an Internet Protocol (IP) communication format and the associated remote controller utilizes a different type of communication format.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the network comprises at least one of a home network, a local area network, or the Internet.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the control signal is originated from, and provided via the network by, at least one of a personal computing device or a smart phone.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the first device comprises an audio/visual (A/V) device, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the method further comprises generating the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the first device comprises a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) switch, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the method further comprises generating the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.

13. A non-transitory, computer readable storage medium having program instructions recorded thereon that, when executed by a processing device, perform a method comprising: receiving, at a first device that is controlled by control signals provided over a network, a control signal of the control signals for a control function via a network interface, the control function being applicable to a second device; determining, at the first device via use of universal control engine (UCE) instructions executed at the first device, that the control function is directed to the second device, the second device being controllable by an associated remote controller; and transmitting a different control signal, for the control function, from the first device to the second device, thereby permitting the second device to be controlled via the received control signal without inputs from the associated remote controller.

14. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the control signals are provided over the network using an Internet Protocol (IP) communication format and the associated remote controller utilizes a different type of communication format.

15. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the network comprises at least one of a home network, a local area network, or the Internet.

16. The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the control signal is originated from, and provided via the network by, at least one of a personal computing device or a smart phone.

The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the first device comprises an audio/visual (A/V) device, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the method further comprises generating the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.

The non-transitory, computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the first device comprises a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) switch, the second device comprises an A/V source device, and the method further comprises generating the different control signal to control the second device based on at least one of: the received control signal, a device type of the second device, or a type of protocol used to control the second device.
