Abstract

A system and method for monitoring a plurality of servers by a monitoring server in a computer network. A list of servers and a plurality of services to monitor in the computer network is generated at the monitoring server. A status query is transmitted sequentially by the monitoring server to each of the plurality of servers, the status query including the plurality of services to monitor at each server. A status message report is received from each of the plurality of servers in response to each status query. An event is reported in an event log for each server that has an abnormal service status. The transmission of the status query to each server is performed by the monitoring server at a specified service time interval.

Claims (40)

1. A method, comprising:

determining, via a monitoring server, a plurality of services to monitor at each of a plurality of servers;

transmitting a status inquiry at least about a Level 5 layer to each of the plurality of servers;

receiving a status message report from each of the plurality of servers, wherein the status message report is received by the monitoring server when an abnormal condition for a service of the plurality of services is detected; and

reporting an event in an event log for each of the plurality of servers where the status is abnormal,

wherein one of the plurality of services is network availability of the plurality of servers.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of services to monitor is performed by the monitoring server at a specified service time interval.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising reconfiguring the specified service time interval at which the monitoring server transmits the plurality of services to monitor.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of services to monitor at each of a plurality of servers is based on registry settings of the monitoring server.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising reconfiguring the plurality of services to be monitored at each server.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein an event is reported in the event log if an error occurred while checking a status of a service.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein an event is reported in the event log if a status of a service is other than running.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein an event is reported in the event log at a start of the monitoring of the services for each server.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein an event is reported in the event log at an end of the monitoring of the services for each server.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the status inquiry at least about the Level 5 layer inquires whether a Service Control Manager of the server is accessible,

wherein the Service Control Manager is at the Level 5 layer, and

wherein the services are at the Level 3 layer.

The method according to claim 10 , wherein the status message comprises either a first event code or a second event code respectively depending on whether either the Service Control Manager at the Level 5 layer is determined to be abnormal or, after determining whether the Service Control Manager at the Level 5 layer is not abnormal, that the service of the services at the Level 3 layer is abnormal.

12. A non-transitory computer program product comprising a computer readable medium having computer readable code embedded therein, the computer readable medium comprising program instructions that, when executed by a processor, perform operations comprising:

determining, via a monitoring server, a plurality of services to monitor at each of a plurality of servers;

transmitting a status inquiry at least about a Level 5 layer to each of the plurality of servers;

receiving a status message report from each of the plurality of servers when an abnormal condition for a service of the plurality of services is detected; and

reporting an event in an event log for each of the plurality of servers where the status is abnormal,

wherein one of the plurality of services is network availability of the plurality of servers.

13. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 wherein the program instructions that monitor the plurality of services are executed at a specified service time interval.

14. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 13 further comprising program instructions that reconfigure the specified service time interval at which the monitoring server transmits the plurality of services to monitor.

15. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 further comprising program instructions that reconfigure the plurality of services to be monitored at each server.

16. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 wherein the program instructions that report an event write an event in the event log if an error occurred while checking the status of a service.

17. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 wherein the program instructions that report an event write an event in the event log if the status of a service is other than running.

18. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 wherein the program instructions that report an event write an event in the event log at a start of the monitoring of the services for each server.

19. The non-transitory computer program product of claim 12 wherein the program instructions that report an event write an event in the event log at an end of the monitoring of the services for each server.

20. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing program instructions and communicably coupled to the processor;

wherein the processor, when executing the instructions, performs operations comprising:

determining a plurality of services to monitor at each of a plurality of servers;

transmitting a status inquiry at least about a Level 5 layer to each of the plurality of servers;

receiving a status message report from each of the plurality of servers when an abnormal condition for a service of the plurality of services is detected; and

reporting an event in an event log for each of the plurality of servers where the status is abnormal,

wherein one of the plurality of services is network availability of the plurality of servers.
