Abstract

Systems and methods for incorporating online user generated media content (e.g., videos) into an interactive video gaming environment are provided. Media assets that are associated with different measures of quality generated by users are stored on a remote server. A player action is received by the remote server. A determination is made as to which one of the plurality of levels of the interactive video gaming environment corresponds to the action. One of the videos associated with one of the measures of quality is selected based on the determination of the level corresponding to the action. The selected video is transmitted to the player.

Claims (50)

1. A method comprising:

generating a display of an interactive 3D environment on an electronic device, wherein the interactive 3D environment allows a plurality of players to join the interactive 3D environment from a plurality of separate devices;

receiving from a device of a player of the plurality of players a list of completed actions performed by the player using a representation of that player in the interactive 3D environment;

evaluating the received list of the completed actions; and

based on the evaluation, authorizing the electronic device of the player to access a particular media asset in the 3D environment, wherein the particular media asset is categorized as a reward and is accessed in response to determining that results of the evaluation are associated with a reward and not a penalty.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the completed action further comprises:

determining whether the completed action is a response to a question provided to the player; and

in response to determining that the completed action is the response to the question provided to the player, determining whether the response is a correct response.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein in response to determining that the response to the question is the correct response, rewarding the player by authorizing the electronic device of the player to access the particular media asset in the 3D environment.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein in response to determining that the response to the question is the correct response, assigning a high rank above a predetermined rank level to the completed action.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein in response to determining that the response to the question is an incorrect response, assigning a lower rank to the completed action.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein evaluating the completed action further comprises:

comparing the list of completed actions with player actions received from the plurality of players; and

determining whether the completed list of actions are associated with a majority or a minority of the player actions received from the plurality of players.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the completed list of actions are associated with the majority of the player actions received from the plurality of players, associating the completed list of actions with a high rank that is above a predetermined rank level; and

in response to determining that the completed list of actions are associated with the minority of the player actions received from the plurality of players, associating the completed list of actions with a rank that is lower than the high rank provided for the completed list of actions being associated with the majority of the player actions.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

making the list of completed actions by the player available to the plurality of players that joined the interactive 3D environment; and

receiving a rank for the list of completed actions from the plurality of players.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising, determining based on the rank received for the list of completed actions from the plurality of players whether to reward the player.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the reward may be provided if the rank exceeds a predetermined threshold, and the penalty may be given if the rank is below the predetermined threshold.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the completed action consists of at least one of receiving a video from the player as part of a game play, receiving from the player a response to an inquiry or question provided during the game play, receiving an indication that the player completed a segment or stage of a game in the interactive 3D environment, and receiving an indication that the player reached or failed to reach a segment of one of a plurality of levels of the game in the interactive 3D environment.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying the list of the completed actions in sequence from earliest created action to latest created action.

13. A method comprising:

generating a display of an interactive 3D environment on an electronic device, wherein the interactive 3D environment allows a plurality of players to join the interactive 3D environment from a plurality of separate devices;

receiving from a device of a player of the plurality of players a list of completed actions performed by the player using a representation of that player in the interactive 3D environment;

evaluating the received list of the completed actions;

determining whether the evaluation results in a reward or a penalty; and

in response to determining that the evaluation results in the reward, retrieving a media asset in the 3D environment from a video asset server that is categorized as a reward, and

in response to determining that the evaluation results in the penalty, retrieving a media asset in the 3D environment from the video asset server that is categorized as a penalty, wherein the media asset categorized for the reward is different from the media asset categorized for the penalty.

14. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

generate a display of an interactive 3D environment on an electronic device, wherein the interactive 3D environment allows a plurality of players to join the interactive 3D environment from a plurality of separate devices;

receive from a device of a player of the plurality of players a list of completed actions performed by the player using a representation of that player in the interactive 3D environment;

evaluate the received list of the completed actions;

determine whether the evaluation results in a reward or a penalty; and

in response to determining that the evaluation results in the reward, retrieve a media asset in the 3D environment from a video asset server that is categorized as a reward, and

in response to determining that the evaluation results in the penalty, retrieve a media asset in the 3D environment from a video asset server that is categorized as a penalty, wherein the media asset categorized for the reward is different from the media asset categorized for the penalty.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein evaluating the completed action further comprises, the control circuitry configured to:

determine whether the completed action is a response to a question provided to the player; and

in response to determining that the completed action is the response to the question provided to the player, determine whether the response is a correct response.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein in response to determining that the response to the question is the correct response, the control circuitry configured to assign a high rank above a predetermined rank level to the completed action.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein evaluating the completed action further comprises, the control circuitry configured to:

compare the list of completed actions with player actions received from the plurality of players; and

determine whether the completed list of actions are associated with a majority or a minority of the player actions received from the plurality of players.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

in response to determining that the completed list of actions are associated with the majority of the player actions received from the plurality of players, associate the completed list of actions with a high rank that is above a predetermined rank level; and

in response to determining that the completed list of actions are associated with the minority of the player actions received from the plurality of players, associate the completed list of actions with a rank that is lower than the high rank provided for the completed list of actions being associated with the majority of the player actions.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the completed action consists of at least one of receiving a video from the player as part of a game play, receiving from the player a response to an inquiry or question provided during the game play, receiving an indication that the player completed a segment or stage of a game in the interactive 3D environment, and receiving an indication that the player reached or failed to reach a segment of one of a plurality of levels of the game in the interactive 3D environment.
