Abstract

A system, method and apparatus for remote control of a thermostat by a network-based server, when the thermostat is not connected to a local or wide-area network. A network-based server calculates a modified temperature profile for a thermostat based on a utility's time-of-use pricing and/or weather forecasts. After the server has calculated the modified temperature profile, it is provided to a mobile device via a wide-area network, and the mobile device provides the modified temperature profile directly to the thermostat when the mobile device is within range of the thermostat.

Claims (38)

1. A method performed by a mobile device, comprising:

storing, by a processor, a temperature profile;

providing, by the processor via a transceiver coupled to the processor, the temperature profile to a remote server via a wide-area network;

receiving, by the processor via the transceiver, a modified temperature profile from the server;

determining, by the processor, when the mobile device is within range of a thermostat comprising a thermostat low-power communication circuitry; and

in response to automatically determining when the mobile device is within range of the thermostat, providing, by the processor via a mobile device low-powered circuitry coupled to the processor, the modified temperature for reception by the thermostat low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified temperature profile is based on a time-of-use utility pricing associated with a utility provider.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified temperature profile is based on a weather forecast.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the processor, identification information identifying a model of the thermostat;

providing, by the processor via a transceiver coupled to the processor, the identification information of the thermostat to the remote server; and

receiving, by the processor via the transceiver, the modified temperature profile from the remote server, the modified temperature profile based on the model of the thermostat.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modified temperature profile comprises a temperature profile that defines HVAC turn-on and turn-off times and associated temperature set points.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

when the mobile device is within range of the thermostat, receiving, by the processor via the mobile device low-powered circuitry coupled to the processor, a historical information from the thermostat; and

providing, by the processor via a transceiver coupled to the processor, the historical information to the server;

wherein the modified temperature profile is determined by the server using the temperature profile and the historical information.

7. A mobile device, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a mobile device low-power communication circuitry;

a transceiver; and

a processor coupled to the memory, the mobile device low-power communication circuitry, and the transceiver, for execution of the processor-executable instructions that causes the mobile device to:

store, by the processor, a temperature profile;

provide, by the processor via the transceiver, the temperature profile to the remote server via a wide-area network;

receive, by the processor via the transceiver, a modified temperature profile from the server;

determine, by the processor, when the mobile device is within range of a thermostat comprising a thermostat low-power communication circuitry; and

in response to automatically determining when the mobile device is within range of the thermostat, provide, by the processor via the mobile device low-powered circuitry coupled to the processor, the modified temperature profile for reception by the thermostat low-power communication circuitry of the thermostat.

8. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the modified temperature profile is based on a time-of-use utility pricing associated with a utility provider.

9. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the modified temperature profile is based on a weather forecast.

10. The mobile device of claim 7 , further comprising additional processor-executable instructions that causes the mobile device to:

receive, by the processor, identification information identifying a model of the thermostat;

provide, by the processor via the transceiver, the identification information of the thermostat to the remote server; and

receive, by the processor via the transceiver, the modified temperature profile from the remote server, the modified temperature profile based on the model of the thermostat.

11. The mobile device of claim 7 , wherein the modified temperature profile comprises a temperature profile that defines HVAC turn-on and turn-off times and associated temperature set points.

12. The mobile device of claim 7 , further comprising:

receive, by the processor via the mobile device low-powered circuitry coupled to the processor, historical information from the thermostat when the mobile device is in range of the thermostat; and

provide, by the processor via a transceiver coupled to the processor, the historical information to the server;

wherein the modified temperature profile is determined by the server using the temperature profile and the historical information.
