Abstract

In a virtual reality environment a user's movements are coupled, meaning the user cannot walk and look in different directions. Discloses are methods and systems for soft decoupling the movements of the user in a virtual reality environment, enabling the user to look and walk in different directions simulating real-world interactions. The soft decoupling is performed by receiving acceleration and orientation data from sensors attached to the user. A heading and a heading delta based on a ratio are calculated. The calculated heading and a velocity are translated into soft decoupling inputs for the virtual reality environment.

Claims (38)

1. A computer-implemented method of soft decoupling an input to an application, the method comprising:

in response to movement of a user on a platform of a 360 degree omnidirectional locomotion system configured to support the user, receiving a first data from at least one first sensor and a second data from at least one second sensor;

calculating, from the first data and second data, a heading delta;

multiplying the heading delta by a ratio;

combining the heading delta and the first data; and

providing the combined heading as the input to the application.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first sensor is a hall effect sensor.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first sensor is an optical tracking sensor.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data is between 0 and 360 degrees.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one first sensor is configured to measure rotation of the user within the platform.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second sensor is a inertial sensor.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second data is between 0 and 360 degrees.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second sensor is configured to measure a direction the user within the platform is looking.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ratio is between 0 and 1.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein calculating the heading delta further comprising:

determining a difference between the first data and the second data.

11. A system of soft decoupling an input to an application, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to:

in response to movement of a user on a platform of a 360 degree omnidirectional locomotion system configured to support the user, receive a first data from at least one first sensor and a second data from at least one second sensor;

calculate, from the first data and the second data, a heading delta;

multiply the heading delta by a ratio;

combine the heading delta and the first data; and

provide the combined heading as the input to the application.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one first sensor is a hall effect sensor.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one first sensor is configured to measure rotation of the user within the platform.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one second sensor is a inertial sensor.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one second sensor is configured to measure a direction the user within the platform is looking.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions, which when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

in response to movement of a user on a platform of a 360 degree omnidirectional locomotion system configured to support the user, receive first data from at least one first sensor and second data from at least one second sensor;

calculate, from the first data and the second data, a heading delta;

multiply the heading delta by a ratio;

combine the heading delta and the first data; and

provide the combined heading as the input to the application.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the at least one first sensor is a hall effect sensor.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the at least one first sensor is configured to measure rotation of the user within the platform.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the at least one second sensor is a inertial sensor.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the at least one second sensor is configured to measure a direction the user within the platform is looking.
