Abstract

Coding techniques for 360-degree video are described. An encoder selects a projection format and maps the 360-degree video to a 2D planar video using the selected projection format. The encoder encodes the 2D planar video in a bitstream and further signals, in the bitstream, parameters identifying the projection format. The parameters identifying the projection format may be signaled in a video parameter set, sequence parameter set, and/or picture parameter set of the bitstream. Different projection formats that may be signaled include formats using geometries such as equirectangular, cubemap, equal-area, octahedron, icosahedron, cylinder, and user-specified polygon. Other parameters that may be signaled include different arrangements of geometric faces or different encoding quality for different faces. Corresponding decoders are also described. In some embodiments, projection parameters may further include relative geometry rotation parameters that define an orientation of the projection geometry.

Claims (32)

1. A video encoding method comprising:

signaling, in a bitstream representing a video comprising at least one picture, a location of a signaled boundary within the picture, wherein signaling the location of the signaled boundary comprises signaling at least one of an x-position or a y-position of the signaled boundary; and

signaling, in the bitstream, an indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a loop filter to at least a portion of the picture to generate a filtered picture, wherein:

the loop filter is not applied across the signaled boundary; and

the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary is an indication that in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising storing the filtered picture in a reference picture store.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the location of the signaled boundary and the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary are signaled in a sequence parameter set.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein signaling the location of the signaled boundary comprises signaling at least one x-position of the signaled boundary.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein signaling the location of the signaled boundary comprises signaling at least one y-position of the signaled boundary.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary comprises an indication of whether a de-blocking filter is disabled across the signaled boundary.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary comprises an indication of whether an adaptive loop filter is disabled across the signaled boundary.

9. A video decoding method comprising:

decoding, from a bitstream representing a video comprising at least one picture, a location of a signaled boundary within the picture, wherein decoding the location of the signaled boundary comprises decoding at least one of an x-position or a y-position of the signaled boundary; and

decoding, from the bitstream, an indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising applying a loop filter to at least a portion of the picture to generate a filtered picture, wherein:

the loop filter is not applied across the signaled boundary; and

the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary is an indication that in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising storing the filtered picture in a reference picture store.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the location of the signaled boundary and the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary are signaled in a sequence parameter set.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein decoding the location of the signaled boundary comprises decoding at least one x-position of the signaled boundary.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein decoding the location of the signaled boundary comprises decoding at least one y-position of the signaled boundary.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary comprises an indication of whether a de-blocking filter is disabled across the signaled boundary.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary comprises an indication of whether an adaptive loop filter is disabled across the signaled boundary.

17. An apparatus comprising one or more processors configured to perform:

decoding, from a bitstream representing a video comprising at least one picture, a location of a signaled boundary within the picture, wherein decoding the location of the signaled boundary comprises decoding at least one of an x-position or a y-position of the signaled boundary; and

decoding, from the bitstream, an indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , further configured to apply a loop filter to at least a portion of the picture to generate a filtered picture, wherein:

the loop filter is not applied across the signaled boundary; and

the indication of whether in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary is an indication that in-loop filtering is disabled across the signaled boundary.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , further configured to store the filtered picture in a reference picture store.
