Abstract

An apparatus for securing an object to bone comprises an anchor comprising a body having a distal end, a proximal end and a passageway extending at least partially between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the body comprises a generally cylindrical outer surface having a recess, and further wherein the passageway of the body is off-center from the cylindrical outer surface of the body at the recess; and a movable element movably disposed in the passageway of the body, wherein when the anchor is disposed in a bone, and an object is secured to a suture extending through the passageway of the body, proximal movement of the movable element binds the suture to the anchor, whereby to secure the object to the bone.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein proximal movement of the movable element causes the body to expand.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein proximal movement of the movable element creates an interference fit between the suture and the anchor.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the object comprises tissue.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the passageway is generally cylindrical.

14. Apparatus for securing an object to bone, the apparatus comprising:

an anchor comprising:

a body having a distal end, a proximal end and a passageway extending at least partially between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the body comprises a longitudinal axis and the passageway comprises a longitudinal axis, wherein the longitudinal axis of the passageway of the body is eccentric to the longitudinal axis of the body, and further wherein the body comprises a generally cylindrical outer surface having a recess; and

a movable element movably disposed in the passageway of the body, wherein when the anchor is disposed in a bone and an object is secured to a suture extending through the passageway of the body, proximal movement of the movable element binds the suture to the anchor, whereby to secure the object to the bone.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the recess is formed along a portion of the cylindrical outer surface of the body so as to provide a substantially flat surface around a portion of the perimeter of the cylindrical outer surface of the body.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the passageway of the body is disposed within the body so as to be diametrically opposed to the substantially flat surface.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the movable element is generally cylindrical.

18. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the passageway of the body comprises a distal section and a proximal section, the distal section of the passageway having a wider diameter than the proximal section of the passageway.

19. The apparatus of claim 14 further comprising an actuation element for moving the movable element proximally within the passageway of the body.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the actuation element comprises a rod.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the actuation element comprises a pull suture.

22. The apparatus of claim 14 further comprising an inserter and an actuation element for moving the movable element proximally within the passageway of the body, wherein the actuation element is connected to the inserter.

23. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein proximal movement of the movable element causes the body to expand.

24. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein proximal movement of the movable element creates an interference fit between the suture and the anchor.

25. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the object comprises tissue.

26. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the passageway is generally cylindrical.

27. Apparatus for securing an object to bone, the apparatus comprising:

an anchor comprising:

a body having a distal end, a proximal end and a passageway extending at least partially between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the body comprises a generally cylindrical outer surface having a recess, and further wherein the passageway of the body is off-center from the cylindrical outer surface of the body at the recess; and

a movable element movably disposed in the passageway of the body, wherein proximal movement of the movable element causes the body to expand.

28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein the recess is formed along a portion of the cylindrical outer surface of the body so as to provide a substantially flat surface around a portion of the perimeter of the cylindrical outer surface of the body.
