Abstract

Systems, methods, and software for provisioning consumer appliance devices and security systems are provided herein. An exemplary method may include provisioning a consumer application device associated with various interactions of a user with the appliance device to generate an signal, such as a panic signal, causing various forms of security systems to escalate the signal to obtain help. Another exemplary method involves allowing the device, when placing the panic signal, to involve back end systems related to the security system to provision access to an emergency service provider (i.e., 911 provider) “just in time,” eliminating the need for costly pre-provisioning.

Claims (40)

1 . A method for provisioning an appliance device comprising:

receiving a service address from a user associated with an appliance device;

validating the received service address;

storing the validated service address;

receiving a panic signal from the user using the appliance device after the validated service address is stored;

providing the validated service address to an emergency telephone number service provider for provisioning, the providing in response to receiving the panic signal; and

transmitting the validated service address to a PSAP associated with the validated service address, the transmitting in response to the provisioning being successful.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the emergency telephone number service provider is a 911 service provider.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the panic signal is triggered by one or more of the user pressing a button on the appliance device, shaking the appliance device, and striking the appliance device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the panic signal is triggered through remote software control mechanism and where the panic signal appears as if it came from the validated service address.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the remote software control mechanism is on a mobile device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the provisioning further includes receiving provisioning data that includes at least one of usage information and user preferences information for the appliance device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the validating the received service address is performed when the appliance device is activated.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the appliance device is one of thermostat, phone handset/base, intercom/intercom controller, doorbell/monitor/announce system, home entertainment device/device controller, intelligent light switch, power controller, and an irrigation control system.

9 . A system for intelligent control of an appliance device, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions executable by the processor to perform a method comprising:

receiving a service address from a user associated with an appliance device;

validating the received service address;

storing the validated service address;

receiving a panic signal from the user using the appliance device after the validated service address is stored;

providing the validated service address to an emergency telephone number service provider for provisioning, the providing in response to receiving the panic signal; and

transmitting the validated service address to a PSAP associated with the validated service address, the transmitting in response to the provisioning being successful.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the emergency telephone number service provider is a 911 service provider.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the panic signal is triggered by one or more of the user pressing a button on the appliance device, shaking the appliance device, and striking the appliance device.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the panic signal is triggered through remote software control mechanism and where the panic signal appears as if it came from the validated service address.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the remote software control mechanism is on a mobile device.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the provisioning further includes receiving provisioning data that includes at least one of usage information and user preferences information for the appliance device.

15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the validating the received service address is performed when the appliance device is activated.

16 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the appliance device is one of thermostat, phone handset/base, intercom/intercom controller, doorbell/monitor/announce system, home entertainment device/device controller, intelligent light switch, power controller, and an irrigation control system.

17 . A non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium storing program instructions for provisioning an appliance device, wherein the program instructions are executable by one or more processors to:

receive a service address from a user associated with an appliance device;

validate the received service address;

store the validated service address;

receive a panic signal from the user using the appliance device;

provide the validated service address to an emergency telephone number service provider for provisioning; and

transmit the validated service address to a national PSAP, wherein the transmitted validated service address is in response to the provisioning being unsuccessful.

18 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 17 , wherein the emergency telephone number service provider is a 911 service provider.

19 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 17 , wherein the panic signal occurs when the user either presses a button, shakes, or strikes the appliance device.

20 . The non-transitory, computer accessible memory medium of claim 15 , wherein the provisioning further includes receiving provisioning data that includes at least one of usage information and user preferences information for the appliance device.
