Abstract

The technology relates to a methods and systems for improving medical imaging procedures. An example method includes receiving a first set of quality metrics for a plurality of medical images acquired at a first imaging facility; receiving a second set of quality metrics for a second plurality of medical images acquired at a second imaging facility; comparing the first set of quality metrics to the second set of quality metrics; based on the comparison of the first set of quality metrics to the second set of quality metrics, generating a benchmark for at least one metric in the first set of quality metrics and the second set of quality metrics; generating facility data based on the generated benchmark and the first set of quality metrics; and sending the facility data to the first imaging facility.

Claims (39)

1. An imaging method comprising:

immobilizing a subject's breast with a breast imaging system and relative to a plurality of sensors;

acquiring image data of the breast using the breast imaging system;

during acquisition of the image data, generating, by each of the plurality of sensors, a signal indicative of a spatial data of a respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors, wherein the spatial data comprises at least one of: (a) a movement of the respective part of the breast, and (b) a degree of contact of the respective part of the breast with a surface of the breast immobilization system;

generating a visual representation of the signals indicative of the spatial data, wherein the visual representation comprises a map of the breast; and

displaying the visual representation.

2. The imaging method of claim 1 , wherein the spatial data comprises the movement of the respective part of the breast, and wherein each of the plurality of sensors comprises at least one of a photo sensor, an infrared sensor, and an ultrasound sensor.

3. The imaging method of claim 1 , wherein the spatial data comprises the movement of the respective part of the breast, and wherein the surface is adapted to apply a force to the breast, and wherein each of the plurality of sensors comprises a force sensor.

4. The imaging method of claim 3 , wherein generating the signal indicative of the spatial data comprises:

generating, by each force sensor, a force signal indicating a measure of force applied to the breast; and

filtering, by a movement detection circuit, a movement signal from the force signal indicating a measure of movement of the breast.

5. The imaging method of claim 1 , wherein the spatial data comprises the degree of contact of the respective part of the breast with the surface of the breast imaging system, and wherein each of the of the sensors comprises a force sensor.

6. The imaging method of claim 1 , wherein the map comprises a motion map comprising a plurality of different colors, wherein each of the plurality of different colors represent a different amount of motion of the respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors.

7. The imaging method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining a breast skin line from the acquired image data and wherein the map comprises a contact map comprising an uncompressed tissue line and the obtained breast skin line.

8. The imaging method of claim 1 , further comprising generating, based on the signals indicative of the spatial data of the respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors, a set of data indicating the respective parts of the breast that moved during the acquisition of image data.

9. The imaging method of claim 8 , wherein the set of data comprises at least one of (a) a magnitude and a direction of the respective parts of the breast that moved, and (b) a set of motion vectors.

10. The imaging method of claim 8 , further comprising modifying the acquired image data based at least in part the set of data.

11. A breast imaging system, comprising:

a radiation source;

a radiation detector spaced apart from the radiation source and configured to receive radiation from the radiation source and generate signals responsive to the received radiation;

a breast immobilization system comprising:

a breast support platform; and

a paddle positionable between the radiation source and radiation detector and adapted to immobilize a subject's breast;

a plurality of sensors disposed on the breast immobilization system, wherein each of the plurality of sensors is configured to generate, during the imaging procedure, a signal indicative of a spatial data of a respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors;

at least one processing unit; and

memory operatively in communication with the at least one processing unit, the memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processing unit, cause the imaging system to perform a method comprising:

immobilizing the subject's breast with the breast immobilization system of the breast imaging system;

acquiring image data of the breast using the breast imaging system;

during acquisition of the image data, generating, by each of the plurality of sensors, a signal indicative of a spatial data of a respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors, wherein the spatial data comprises at least one of: (a) a movement of the respective part of the breast, and (b) a degree of contact of the respective part of the breast with a surface of the breast immobilization system;

generating a visual representation of the signals indicative of the spatial data, wherein the visual representation comprises a map of the breast; and

displaying the visual representation.

12. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the spatial data comprises the movement of the respective part of the breast, and wherein each of the plurality of sensors comprises at least one of a photo sensor, an infrared sensor, and an ultrasound sensor.

13. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the spatial data comprises the movement of the respective part of the breast, and wherein the surface is adapted to apply a force to the breast, and wherein each of the plurality of sensors comprises a force sensor.

14. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of sensors are disposed on or in the breast support platform.

15. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of sensors are disposed on or in the paddle.

16. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein generating the visual representation comprises generating a motion map comprising a plurality of different colors, wherein each of the plurality of different colors represent a different amount of motion of the respective part of the breast adjacent each of the plurality of sensors.

17. The imaging system of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises obtaining a breast skin line from the acquired image data and wherein the visual representation comprises a contact map comprising an uncompressed tissue line and the obtained breast skin line.

18. The imaging system of claim 11 , further comprising a display for displaying the visual representation.

19. The imaging system of claim 18 , wherein the display is integral with the imaging system.
