Abstract

A surgical apparatus configured to be placed in the musculoskeletal system to precisely separate a first bone from a second bone. The surgical apparatus has one or more sensors to measure one or more parameters and supports one or more bone cuts for installing a prosthetic component. The surgical apparatus has three distraction mechanisms configured to increase or decrease a height between a first support structure and a second support structure. The tilt mechanism adjusts the tilt between the first support structure relative to the second support structure. The tilt mechanism of the surgical apparatus is adjusted from a first tilt to a second tilt to support a bone cut on one of the first or second bones.

Claims (25)

1. A method for joint balancing, comprising the steps of:

inserting a tensor in a first position into a joint to contact a first support structure of the tensor with a first bone of the joint and a second support structure of the tensor with the first bone and a second bone of the joint;

moving the tensor to a second position to distract the first and second bones to increase a distance therebetween using a distraction mechanism, the distraction mechanism being coupled to the second support structure, the second support structure contacting the second bone but not the first bone in the second position, and

tilting the second support structure to vary a medial distance and a lateral distance between the first and second bones, the medial distance being defined between a medial side of the second bone and a medial side of the first bone, and the lateral distance being defined between a lateral side of the second bone and a lateral side of the first bone,

wherein the step of tilting the second support structure includes moving a medial support structure of the second support structure to change the medial distance, and moving a lateral support structure of the second support structure to change the lateral distance.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the medial support structure is performed independently from moving the lateral support structure.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of moving the medial support structure includes traversing a medial screw to move the medial support structure.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the step of moving the lateral support structure includes traversing a lateral screw to move the lateral support structure.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the tensor to the second position includes traversing a lead screw to move the first support structure with respect to the second support structure.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of moving the tensor to the second position includes moving the tensor to distract the first and second bones to a predetermined distance therebetween using the distraction mechanism.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the predetermined distance is based on a load between the first and second bones.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the load is measured by a sensor coupled to the tensor.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of tilting the second support structure includes tilting the second support structure from a first tilt angle to a second tilt angle.

10. The method claim 9 , further including a step of resecting any of the first bone and the second bone at the second tilt angle.

11. A method for joint balancing, comprising the steps of:

inserting a tensor in an initial position into a joint to contact a medial surface of the tensor with a medial side of the joint and a lateral surface of the tensor with a lateral side of the joint;

moving the tensor to a first position to simultaneously change a medial height of the medial side and a lateral height of the lateral side of the joint by a first distance using a first distraction mechanism;

moving the tensor to a second position using a second distraction mechanism to change the medial height to a second distance, the medial surface and the lateral surface lying on a single plane in the second position, and

moving the tensor to a third position using a third distraction mechanism to change the lateral height to a third distance,

wherein the medial and lateral surfaces lies on a single plane in the third position.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of moving the tensor to the first position includes traversing a lead screw to move a first support of the tensor with respect to a second support of the tensor.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of moving the tensor to the second position includes rotating the medial surface about a first pivot point of the first distraction mechanism, the first pivot point being coupled to the tensor.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of rotating the medial surface includes traversing a medial screw.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the step of moving the tensor to the third position includes rotating the lateral surface about a second pivot point of the second distraction mechanism, the second pivot point being coupled to the tensor.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of rotating the lateral surface includes traversing a lateral screw.
