Abstract

A semiconductor module comprises a string made up of a plurality of cells or strips arranged in series. A front surface of at least one cell or strip, has a polarity opposite to that of the front surface of another cell or strip in the string. In some embodiments the strips may comprise photovoltaic devices of different structures, for example Heterojunction (HJT) and Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon). According to certain embodiments, one or more cells or strips of the string may be arranged in an overlapping shingled configuration, such that a front surface of the overlapped strip exhibits the appropriate polarity. For particular embodiments, one or more cells or strips may be adjacent in the string, such that a cell or strip has a front or back surface of polarity appropriate to connect with the adjacent cell or strip (e.g., using a ribbon located on a same surface).

Claims (30)

1. A photovoltaic (PV) string comprising:

a first bifacial photovoltaic device having a front side of a first polarity, the front side having an edge oriented in a first direction; and

a second bifacial photovoltaic device located in the same PV string as the first photovoltaic device, the second photovoltaic device arranged in series with the first photovoltaic device and having a front side of a second polarity opposite to the first polarity, the front side of the second photovoltaic device having an edge substantially aligned with the edge of the first photovoltaic device, and

a third bifacial photovoltaic device located in the same PV string as the first photovoltaic device, the third photovoltaic device arranged in series with the first and second photovoltaic devices, the third photovoltaic device having a front side of the first polarity, the front side of the third photovoltaic device having an edge substantially aligned with the edge of the first photovoltaic device,

wherein the first PV device overlaps another PV device of the PV string in an overlapping shingled arrangement.

2. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first photovoltaic device has a same structure as the second photovoltaic device.

3. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first photovoltaic device has a structure different from the second photovoltaic device.

4. The PV string of claim 3 wherein the structure is selected from the group comprising:

heterojunction (HJT);

passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC); and

tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon).

5. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first polarity comprises N type and the second polarity comprises P type.

6. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first polarity comprises P type and the second polarity comprises N type.

7. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first PV device and the second PV device are adjacent.

8. The PV string of claim 7 wherein the first PV device and the second PV device are in serial electrical communication through a ribbon.

9. The PV string of claim 8 wherein the ribbon is located on front sides of the first and second PV devices.

10. The PV string of claim 8 wherein the ribbon is located on rear sides of the first and second PV devices.

11. The PV string of claim 8 wherein the ribbon includes a light capturing feature.

12. The PV string of claim 8 wherein the ribbon provides a buffer for mechanical stress.

13. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first PV device comprises a solar cell.

14. The PV string of claim 1 wherein the first PV device comprises a strip singulated from a workpiece.

15. A method of fabricating a photovoltaic (PV) string comprising:

connecting a first bifacial photovoltaic device having a front side of a first polarity to the PV string, the front side having an edge oriented in a first direction; and

connecting a second bifacial photovoltaic device to the same PV string as the first photovoltaic device is connected to, the second photovoltaic device arranged in series with the first photovoltaic device, the second photovoltaic device having a front side of a second polarity opposite to the first polarity, the front side of the second photovoltaic device having an edge substantially aligned with the edge of the first photovoltaic device,

connecting a third bifacial photovoltaic device to the same PV string as the first photovoltaic device is connected to, the third photovoltaic device arranged in series with the first and second photovoltaic devices, the third photovoltaic device having a front side of the first polarity, the front side of the third photovoltaic device having an edge substantially aligned with the edge of the first photovoltaic device, and

connecting another PV device to the same PV string as the first PV device is connected to such that the first PV device overlaps the another PV device in an overlapping shingled arrangement.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the first photovoltaic device and the second photovoltaic device are adjacent.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the first photovoltaic device has a structure different from the second photovoltaic device.

18. The method of claim 15 wherein the first photovoltaic device and the second photovoltaic device are arranged in series through a ribbon located on a same side.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the same side comprises back sides of the first photovoltaic device and the second photovoltaic device.
