Abstract

A rimless cartridge comprising a case and a bullet mounted therein. In embodiments, the bullet comprises a jacket having a cylindrical body portion, an ogive portion, and a plurality of longitudinally extending paths of weakness formed in the ogive portion and defining petals there between and extending rearward from the mouth. The bullet includes a malleable core mounted within the jacket. The bullet further comprises a circumferential groove between forward and rearward circumferential indentations imparted in the body portion of the jacket.

Claims (62)

1. A rimless cartridge comprising:

a case; and

a bullet inserted into an opening of the case, the bullet comprising:

a core,

a jacket of metallic material at least partially enveloping the core,

a rearward cylindrical body portion,

a forward tapered portion,

a transition point where the rearward cylindrical body portion meets the forward tapered portion,

a forward cavity, and

a plurality of expansion petals in the jacket,

the bullet further comprising a circumferential groove formed in the jacket and comprising a bottom, the circumferential groove selected from one of: positioned adjacent the transition point, and formed in the tapered portion,

wherein the circumferential groove extends into the jacket forming an outwardly opening shape comprising an acute angle, and

wherein, upon firing and impact, the expansion petals are configured to fold back, and the circumferential groove is configured to release the plurality of expansion petals to prevent over-expansion.

2. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the acute angle is radially oriented and about 20-60 degrees.

3. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , the bottom of the circumferential groove being substantially flat and comprising an axial width.

4. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the core at the bottom of the circumferential groove is substantially uniform relative to the diameter of the core at a point longitudinally adjacent to the bottom.

5. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , the circumferential groove being positioned in one or more of:

forward of a leading edge of the case, and

rearward of a depth of the forward cavity.

6. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein an innermost portion of the circumferential groove comprises a diameter measuring about 91% to 96% of a diameter of a bearing surface of the bullet.

7. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein a cross section of the bullet at the circumferential groove has a diameter of about 0.333 inches.

8. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential groove comprises a depth of about 0.011 inches relative to an adjacent outer surface of the bullet.

9. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential groove is selected from one of:

a cut-in cannelure,

a formed groove, wherein material is removed in forming the circumferential groove, or

a rolled-in groove, wherein the circumferential groove is formed without removing material.

10. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , the circumferential groove being positioned adjacent and forward of the transition point.

11. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential groove of the jacket is only formed in an outer surface of the jacket, and

the circumferential groove is configured to release the expansion petals in an event of a bullet impact with a surface that results in rearward axial expansion of the expansion petals to the circumferential groove.

The rimless cartridge of claim 11 , wherein the circumferential groove is configured to be a stress riser in the jacket in an event of rearward axial expansion of the expansion petals to the circumferential groove, such that the circumferential groove is configured to release the expansion petals at a location along an axial width of the circumferential groove.

13. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the jacket comprises a generally uniform thickness along the rearward cylindrical body portion.

14. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the jacket is non-bonded.

15. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , the bullet further comprising a rearward circumferential indentation formed in the rearward cylindrical body portion and being positioned rearward of the circumferential groove; and

the jacket further comprising a forward bearing surface and a rearward bearing surface each being longitudinally adjacent to the rearward circumferential indentation,

wherein the rearward cylindrical body portion of the bullet comprises cross-sectional symmetry along the forward and rearward bearing surfaces, and

wherein the jacket has a thickness at the rearward circumferential indentation that is substantially uniform relative to a thickness of the jacket at a surface longitudinally adjacent to the rearward circumferential indentation.

16. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , the bullet further comprising:

a plurality of skives defining the plurality of expansion petals in the jacket, each skive being axially oriented and comprising a forward end and a rearward end, and

radial segments formed in the core and the plurality skives, wherein the radial segments are radially aligned with the plurality of expansion petals.

17. The rimless cartridge of claim 16 , further comprising a forward circumferential indentation formed in the tapered portion and axially positioned at or adjacent to the rearward end of at least one of the plurality of skives and positioned axially forward of the circumferential groove,

wherein the forward circumferential indentation defines a first diameter of the bullet and the circumferential groove defines a second diameter, the first and second diameters being substantially equal, and

wherein the forward circumferential indentation forms a circumferential channel comprising a rounded bottom.

18. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the jacket comprises a substantially uniform thickness along a length of the bullet, excluding axial portions that include circumferential indentations or grooves.

19. The rimless cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the bullet is a caliber chosen from the group consisting of 9 mm caliber, 10 mm caliber, 40 caliber and 45 caliber.

20. A rimless cartridge comprising:

a case; and

a bullet inserted into an opening of the case, the bullet comprising:

a core,

a jacket of metallic material at least partially enveloping the core,

a rearward cylindrical body portion,

a forward tapered portion,

a transition point where the rearward cylindrical body portion meets the forward tapered portion,

a forward cavity, and

a plurality of expansion petals in the jacket,

the bullet further comprising a circumferential groove formed in the jacket and comprising a bottom, the circumferential groove selected from one of: positioned adjacent the transition point, and formed in the tapered portion,

wherein a thickness of the jacket between the core and the bottom of the circumferential groove is about three fourths or less than a thickness of the jacket at an immediately adjacent point forward of the circumferential groove, and

wherein, upon firing and impact, the expansion petals are configured to fold back, and the circumferential groove is configured to release the plurality of expansion petals to prevent over-expansion.

21. The rimless cartridge of claim 20 , wherein the thickness of the jacket between the core and the bottom of the circumferential groove is relative to the thickness of the jacket at an immediately adjacent point forward of the circumferential groove is selected from at least one of:

about three fourths or less;

about two thirds or less; and

about one third or less.

22. The rimless cartridge of claim 20 , wherein the jacket does not appreciably project radially into the core at the circumferential groove.
