RAPIDLY DISINTEGRATING GELATINOUS COATED TABLETS
The present invention relates to an improved gelatinous coated dosage form having two end regions coated with gelatinous materials and an exposed circumferential band. Openings are provided in at least the exposed band to reveal the core material. The invention also relates to methods for manufacturing such gelatinous coated dosage forms.
32 . A dosage form, comprising:
a core, wherein the core comprises at least one active ingredient;
a subcoating, wherein the subcoating is applied to the exterior surface of the core;
a first gelatinous coating applied to a first end of the core;
a second gelatinous coating applied to a second end of the core;
wherein the gelatinous coating comprises a film former selected from the group consisting of waxy maize starch, tapioca dextrin, and derivatives and mixtures thereof; a thickener selected from the group consisting of sucrose, dextrose, fructose, maltodextrin, polydextrose, and derivatives and mixtures thereof; and a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, vegetable oils such as castor oil, glycerin, and mixtures thereof
wherein the first gelatinous coating and the second gelatinous coating are applied to the first end of the core and the second end of the core, respectively, after the subcoating is applied to the exterior surface of the core;
wherein the first gelatinous coating and the second gelatinous coating are separated from one another and form a gap through which the subcoating is exposed, wherein the gap has a width of equal to or greater than 7% to about 25% of an overall length of the core; and
wherein the dissolution characteristics of the at least one active ingredient meets USP specifications for immediate release tablets containing the active ingredient.
