Abstract

The presently disclosed embodiments may include a computer readable medium including instructions that when executed by one or more processing devices cause the one or more processing devices to perform a method. The method may include: analyzing an electronic document text; identifying in the electronic document text a first drafted text element to be modified; causing the first drafted text element to be highlighted to a user on a display; generating at least one text output option that conveys a meaning associated with the first drafted text element but includes one or more changes relative to the first drafted text element; and causing the at least one text output option to be shown to the user via the display.

Claims (60)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium including instructions that when executed by one or more processing devices cause the one or more processing devices to perform a method including:

initiating a writing assistant application in response to input received from a user, the writing assistant application being associated with at least one graphical user interface element shown on a display;

analyzing, using one or more trained models providing a natural language generation function, an electronic document text;

identifying in the electronic document text a first drafted text element to be modified;

causing the first drafted text element to be highlighted to the user on the display;

generating, using the one or more trained models, at least one text output option that conveys a meaning associated with the first drafted text element but includes one or more changes relative to the first drafted text element;

causing the at least one text output option to be shown to the user via the display;

receiving user input, wherein the user input includes a collection of two or more words that convey at least one idea;

automatically constructing, using the one or more trained models, at least one additional text output option that expresses the at least one idea;

causing the at least one additional text output option to be shown on the display;

receiving from the user an indication of a selection of the additional text output option;

generating, using the one or more trained models, at least one refined text output option based on the selected additional text output option; and

causing the at least one refined text output option to be shown on the display.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the at least one refined text output option includes at least one complete sentence.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the at least one refined text output option conveys the at least one idea but differs from the additional text output option in at least one aspect.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further includes receiving a user selection of the at least one refined text output option and automatically inserting the user-selected refined text output option into a document.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the document includes at least one of an email or a word processor file.

6. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further includes:

receiving from the user an indication of a selection of the at least one refined text output option for initiating generation of one or more further refined text output options based on the selected refined text output option;

generating the one or more further refined text output options; and

causing the one or more further refined text output options to be shown on the display.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the one or more further refined text output options each convey the at least one idea but each differ from the at least one refined text output option in at least one respect.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the one or more trained models are trained machine learning models.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the writing assistant application is incorporated into word processing software, an email editor, or presentation software.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the at least one graphical user interface element includes at least one of a window, a field, a virtual button, an icon, or a menu item.

11. A non-transitory computer readable medium including instructions that when executed by one or more processing devices cause the one or more processing devices to perform a method including:

initiating a writing assistant application in response to input received from a user, the writing assistant application being associated with at least one graphical user interface element shown on a display;

receiving from the user an indication of a drafted text element in an electronic document to be analyzed;

generating, using one or more trained models providing a natural language generation function, at least one text output option that conveys a meaning associated with the drafted text element but includes one or more changes relative to the drafted text element; and

causing the at least one text output option to be shown to the user via the display.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the text element to be analyzed includes a group of words within a sentence.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the text element to be analyzed includes a sentence.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the text element to be analyzed includes more than one sentence.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one text output includes a complete sentence.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more changes relative to the drafted text element include a style modification.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more changes relative to the drafted text element include a modification in grammar.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more changes relative to the drafted text element include a modification of one or more words included in the first drafted text element.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the method further includes receiving a user selection of the at least one text output option and automatically inserting the user-selected text output option into the document text in place of the drafted text element.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one text output option includes more words than the drafted text element.

21. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one text output option includes fewer words than the drafted text element.

22. The method non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one text output option includes at least one of a change in verb tense, an addition of at least one clause, or a substitution of one or more synonyms relative to the drafted text element.

23. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the method includes;

receiving user input, wherein the user input includes a collection of two or more words that convey at least one idea;

automatically constructing two or more text output options that each express the at least one idea, wherein the two or more text output options differ from one another in at least one aspect;

causing the two or more text output options to be shown on the display;

receiving from the user an indication of a selection of one of the two or more text output options;

generating one or more refined text output options based on the selected one of the two or more text output options; and

causing the one or more refined text output options to be shown on the display.

24. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 23 , wherein the one or more refined text output options includes at least one complete sentence.

25. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 23 , wherein the one or more refined text output options convey the at least one idea but differ from each of the two or more text output options in at least one aspect.

26. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 23 , wherein the method further includes receiving a user selection of at least one of the one or more refined text output options and automatically inserting the user-selected refined text output option into a document.

27. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 26 , wherein the document includes at least one of an email or a word processor file.

28. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 23 , wherein the method further includes:

receiving from the user an indication of a selection of one of the one or more refined text output options for initiating generation of one or more further refined text output options based on the selected refined text output option;

generating the one or more further refined text output options; and

causing the one or more further refined text output options to be shown on the display.

29. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the one or more further refined text output options each convey the at least one idea but each differ from the one or more refined text output options in at least one respect.

30. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more trained models are trained machine learning models.

31. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the writing assistant application is incorporated into word processing software, an email editor, or presentation software.

32. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the at least one graphical user interface element includes at least one of a window, a field, a virtual button, an icon, or a menu item.
