Abstract

Apparatus and methods are disclosed, including providing available data operations for the storage system processor to a host processor, identifying data operations to be performed by the storage system processor, and assigning identified data operations to the storage system processor to reduce bus traffic between the host processor and the storage system processor, to improve host processor performance, and to reduce energy use by the host processor.

Claims (58)

1. A system comprising:

a host device comprising a host processor and a group of volatile memory cells; and

a single storage system comprising a group of non-volatile memory cells and a storage system processor,

wherein the storage system processor is configured to:

provide available data operations for the storage system processor to the host processor, and

wherein the host processor is configured to:

identify data operations to be performed by the storage system processor; and

assign identified data operations to the storage system processor to reduce bus traffic between the host processor and the storage system processor, to improve host processor performance, and to reduce energy use by the host processor.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein to identify data operations to be performed by the storage system processor comprises to:

detect a period of storage system inactivity; and

assign a data operation to the storage system to be performed on data on the storage system to reduce bus traffic between the host processor and to reduce processing to be done on the host processor.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the period of storage system inactivity comprises a period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations comprises a period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations from the host device.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the memory operations from the host device comprise read, write, and erase operations from the host device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data operations to be performed by the storage system processor include at least one of:

move data from a first location to a second location on the storage system;

duplicate information on the storage system;

trigger a pre-conditioned activity for the storage system to detect and perform (if A, then B); or

pre-fetch data on the storage system from non-volatile memory, and

wherein the storage system processor is configured to perform the assigned data operations in response to a request for the result of the assigned identified data operation by the host processor.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data operations to be performed by the storage system processor include at least one of:

move data from a first location to a second location on the storage system; or

duplicate information on the storage system,

wherein the storage system processor is configured to perform the assigned data operations in response to a request for the result of the assigned identified data operation by the host processor.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data operations to be performed by the storage system processor include at least one of:

trigger a pre-conditioned activity for the storage system to detect and perform (if A, then B); or

pre-fetch data on the storage system from non-volatile memory, and

wherein the storage system processor is configured to perform the assigned data operations in response to a request for the result of the assigned identified data operation by the host processor.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the storage system processor is configured to perform the assigned data operations as they are received from the host processor.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the storage system processor is configured to:

receive an assigned identified data operation from the host system;

detect a period of storage system inactivity; and

perform the assigned identified data operation during the detected period of storage system inactivity.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the group of non-volatile memory cells comprises a three-dimensional architecture semiconductor memory array.

12. A method comprising:

providing, using a storage system processor of a single storage system, available data operations for the single storage system to a host processor of a host device, and

identifying, using the host processor, data operations to be performed by the storage system processor; and

assigning, using the host processor, identified data operations to the storage system processor to reduce bus traffic between the host processor and the storage system processor, to improve host processor performance, and to reduce energy use by the host processor,

wherein the single storage system comprises the storage system processor and a group of non-volatile memory cells, and

wherein the host device comprises the host processor and a group of volatile memory cells.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein identifying data operations to be performed by the storage system processor comprises:

detecting a period of storage system inactivity; and

assigning a data operation to the storage system to be performed on data on the storage system to reduce bus traffic between the host processor and to reduce processing to be done on the host processor.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the period of storage system inactivity comprises a period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations comprises a period when the storage system processor is not processing memory operations from the host device.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the memory operations from the host device comprise read, write, and erase operations from the host device.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the data operations to be performed by the storage system processor include at least one of:

moving data from a first location to a second location on the storage system;

duplicating information on the storage system;

triggering a pre-conditioned activity for the storage system to detect and perform (if A, then B);
