Abstract

A body support structure includes a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments each having an outer portion coupled to a support structure and an inner portion. Each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween. A body support member is spaced forwardly from the pair of load bearing support segments. A plurality of links connect the load bearing support segments to the body support member.

Claims (41)

1. A body support structure comprising:

a support structure comprising a pair of spaced apart uprights;

a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments each having an outer portion coupled to the pair of spaced apart uprights respectively and an inner portion, wherein each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and wherein the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween;

a body support member spaced forwardly from the pair of load bearing support segments; and

a plurality of links connecting the load bearing support segments to the body support member.

2. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the body support member comprises a plurality of body support segments.

3. The body support structure of claim 2 wherein the plurality of body support segments are pivotally coupled to each other.

4. The body support structure of claim 3 wherein the plurality of body support segments are pivotally coupled with living hinges.

5. The body support structure of claim 2 wherein the plurality of body support segments comprises a pair of outboard body support segments joined to at least one intermediate body support segment.

6. The body support structure of claim 5 wherein the plurality of links comprises a first link connecting one of the outboard body support segments to one of the pair of load bearing segments, and a second link connecting the other of the outboard body support segments to the other of the load bearing segments.

7. The body support structure of claim 6 wherein the plurality of links further comprises third and fourth links connecting the intermediate body support segment to the pair of load bearing segments respectively.

8. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the body support member comprises laterally spaced outer free edges, wherein the outer free edges are rearwardly deflectable.

9. A body support structure comprising:

a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments each having an outer portion coupled to a support structure and an inner portion, wherein each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and wherein the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween;

a body support member spaced forwardly from the pair of load bearing support segments;

a plurality of links connecting the load bearing support segments to the body support member; and

a biasing member disposed across the gap between and coupled to the inner portions of the pair of load bearing segments.

10. The body support structure of claim 9 wherein the biasing member comprises a spring.

11. A body support structure comprising:

a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments each having an outer portion coupled to a support structure and an inner portion, wherein each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and wherein the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween;

a body support member spaced forwardly from the pair of load bearing support segments; and

a plurality of links connecting the load bearing support segments to the body support member, wherein at least some of the plurality of links are angled inwardly from the load bearing support segments toward the body support member.

12. The body support structure of claim 1 wherein the body support member is moveable toward the load bearing support segments.

13. A body support structure comprising:

a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments each having an outer portion coupled to a support structure and an inner portion, wherein each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and wherein the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween;

a body support member spaced forwardly from the pair of load bearing support segments and comprising a pair of outboard body support segments pivotally connected to at least one intermediate body support segment; and

a first link connecting one of the outboard body support segments to one of the load bearing segments, a second link connecting the other of the outboard body support segments to the other of the load bearing segments, and third and fourth links connecting the pair of load bearing support segments to the intermediate body support segment.

14. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the outboard body support segments are pivotally coupled to the at least one intermediate body support segment with living hinges.

15. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the outboard body support segments each define an outer free edge, wherein the outer free edges are rearwardly deflectable.

16. The body support structure of claim 13 further comprising a biasing member disposed across the gap between and coupled to the inner portions of the pair of load bearing segments.

17. The body support structure of claim 16 wherein the biasing member comprises a spring.

18. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the support structure comprises a pair of spaced apart uprights, wherein the outer portions of the load bearing support segments are fixedly coupled to the pair of uprights respectively.

19. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the first, second, third and fourth links are angled inwardly from the load bearing support segments toward the body support member.

20. The body support structure of claim 13 wherein the body support member is moveable toward the load bearing support segments.

21. A method of supporting a user in a body support structure comprising:

applying a load to a body support member comprising a pair of outboard body support segments pivotally connected to at least one intermediate body support segment and thereby pivoting the outboard body support segments relative to the intermediate body support segment;

transferring the load from the body support member to a pair of laterally extending load bearing support segments through a plurality of links, wherein each of the load bearing support segments comprises an outer portion and an inner portion, wherein each of the load bearing support segments extends laterally inwardly from the outer portion, and wherein the inner portions are laterally spaced apart so as to define a gap therebetween; and

transferring the load from the load bearing support segments to a support structure coupled to the outer portions thereof.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein transferring the load from the body support member to the load bearing support segments comprises tensioning the plurality of links.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising applying a biasing force to the inner portions of the load bearing support segments.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein applying the load to the body support member further comprises deflecting an outboard free edge of the body support member.
