Abstract

High capacity silicon based anode active materials are described for lithium ion batteries. These materials are shown to be effective in combination with high capacity lithium rich cathode active materials. Supplemental lithium is shown to improve the cycling performance and reduce irreversible capacity loss for at least certain silicon based active materials. In particular silicon based active materials can be formed in composites with electrically conductive coatings, such as pyrolytic carbon coatings or metal coatings, and composites can also be formed with other electrically conductive carbon components, such as carbon nanofibers and carbon nanoparticles. Additional alloys with silicon are explored.

Claims (12)

1. A lithium ion battery comprising a positive electrode comprising a lithium metal oxide, a negative electrode, and a separator between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, wherein the negative electrode comprises silicon-based active material comprising silicon oxide, electrically conductive components, polymer binder and supplemental lithium at an amount corresponding to about 2.5% or more of the negative electrode capacity, wherein the negative electrode has a density of silicon-based active material of about 0.6 g/cm 3 or more, can generate a capacity per unit area of about 3.5 mAh/cm 2 or more, and the negative electrode has average dry thickness at least 40 microns.

2. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the polymer binder comprises a polyimide.

3. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the silicon-based active material comprises a silicon-carbon composite material.

4. The lithium ion battery of claim 3 wherein the silicon-carbon composite material comprises pyrolytic carbon.

5. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the negative electrode comprises from about 2 weight percent to about 30 weight percent of the electrically conductive components, and the electrically conductive components are dispersed through the negative electrode and comprise carbon fiber having an average diameter from about 25 nm to about 250 nm and an average length from about 2 microns to about 25 microns.

6. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the negative electrode has average dry thickness at least 50 microns, and the silicon-based active material has a 10 th cycle specific discharge capacity of at least 1000 mAh/g of rate of C/3.

7. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the lithium metal oxide is represented by Li 1+x M 1−y O 2−z F z where M is one or more metal elements, x is from 0.01 to 0.33, y is from x−0.2 to x+0.2 with the proviso that y≥0, and z is from 0 to 0.2.

8. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the negative electrode further comprises supplemental lithium at an amount corresponding to about 2.5% to about 35% of the negative electrode capacity.

9. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein a total available active lithium is no more than about 110 percent of the negative electrode capacity, and wherein the total available active lithium is a sum of the supplemental lithium and a positive electrode theoretical capacity.

10. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the supplemental lithium is in the form of lithium metal and/or alloy associated with the negative electrode.

11. The lithium ion battery of claim 1 wherein the supplemental lithium is in the form of electroactive lithium or at least a portion of an SEI layer.
