Abstract

The described methods and systems decrease instances of distracted driving, encourage more frequent use of vehicle tracking services, and generally improve the risk profile of a driver and vehicle. These benefits are achieved by way of a vehicle computer system that incentivizes users to place mobile devices in a do-not-disturb (DND) mode and to activate vehicle tracking services. The vehicle computer system encourages these behaviors by enabling content delivery for devices within the vehicle based on the status of the mobile device(s) and the status of the vehicle tracking service(s). Specifically, the content delivery may comprise data for providing a gamified user interface within the vehicle.

Claims (57)

1. A mobile device coupled to a gamified user interface in a vehicle, the mobile device is configured to:

track a first status of a drive tracking service;

track a second status of the mobile device;

determine whether or not the first status indicates that the drive tracking service is active;

determine whether or not the second status indicates that the mobile device is in a do-not-disturb (“DND”) mode;

if the first status is determined to indicate that the drive tracking service is active and the second status is determined to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, activate the gamified user interface;

if the first status is determined not to indicate that the drive tracking service is active, deactivate the gamified user interface; and

if the second status is determined not to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, deactivate the gamified user interface.

2. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein at least a part of the drive tracking service is implemented by the mobile device.

3. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein at least a part of the drive tracking service is implemented by a vehicle monitor device;

wherein the vehicle monitor device comprises an image sensor that is configured to capture one or more images of a head of a driver; and

wherein the drive tracking service is configured to estimate a head pose or an eye gaze of the driver based on the one or more captured images.

4. The mobile device of claim 3 , wherein the vehicle monitor device comprises a GPS receiver for tracking a location of the vehicle.

5. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the gamified user interface is projected onto a heads-up display.

6. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein to activate the gamified user interface, the mobile device is further configured to activate the gamified user interface by transmitting an activation message to a content delivery device.

7. The mobile device of claim 1 further configured to:

transmit a message including the first status and the second status to a content delivery device, wherein the content delivery device is configured to activate or deactivate the gamified user interface based on the first status and the second status.

8. The mobile device of claim 1 , wherein the DND mode is a state of operation of the mobile device in which data connection of the mobile device is deactivated.

9. A method for automatically managing a gamified user interface at a vehicle, the method comprising:

tracking a first status of a drive tracking service;

tracking a second status of a mobile device;

determining whether or not the first status indicates that the drive tracking service is active;

determining whether or not the second status indicates that the mobile device is in a do-not-disturb (“DND”) mode;

if the first status is determined to indicate that the drive tracking service is active and the second status is determined to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, activating the gamified user interface;

if the first status is determined not to indicate that the drive tracking service is active, deactivating the gamified user interface; and

if the second status is determined not to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, deactivating the gamified user interface.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

capturing, by an image sensor, one or more images of a head of a driver; and

estimating, by the drive tracking service, a head pose or an eye gaze of the driver based on the one or more captured images.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

tracking, by the drive tracking service, a location of the vehicle to enable tracking of a path of the vehicle based on an analysis of GPS data collected by a GPS receiver.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

providing the gamified user interface by at least:

providing an indication that a reward has been achieved for reaching a threshold time or a threshold score associated with utilizing the DND mode and the drive tracking service.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

transmitting, based on the first status and the second status, a message to a server that provides or revokes an authorization for the gamified user interface.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising: transmitting, to a server, a message carrying the first and second statuses, wherein the server is configured to authorize or unauthorize the gamified user interface based on the first status and second status.

15. A system for automatically triggering activation of a gamified user interface at a vehicle, the system comprising:

one or more memories comprising executable instructions thereon;

one or more processors configured to execute the instructions and perform operations comprising:

tracking a first status of a drive tracking service;

tracking a second status of a mobile device;

determining whether or not the first status indicates that the drive tracking service is active;

determining whether or not the second status indicates that the mobile device is in a do-not-disturb (“DND”) mode;

if the first status is determined to indicate that the drive tracking service is active and the second status is determined to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, activating the gamified user interface;

if the first status is determined not to indicate that the drive tracking service is active, deactivating the gamified user interface; and

if the second status is determined not to indicate that the mobile device is in the DND mode, deactivating the gamified user interface.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

detecting a presence of the mobile device within the vehicle by at least:

receiving a message from the mobile device indicating a request to activate the drive tracking service or a verification that the drive tracking service has been activated.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving one or more images of a head of a driver captured by an image sensor; and

estimating a head pose or an eye gaze of the driver based on the one or more captured images.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting an activation message to a content delivery device to cause the content delivery system to transmit data associated with the gamified user interface.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein at least a part of the drive tracking service is implemented by the mobile device.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the DND mode is a state of operation of the mobile device in which data connection and cellular connection of the mobile device are deactivated.
