Abstract

A vehicle battery charger and a vehicle battery charging system are described and illustrated, and can include a controller enabling a user to enter a time of day at which the vehicle battery charger or system begins and/or ends charging of the vehicle battery. The vehicle battery charger can be separate from the vehicle, can be at least partially integrated into the vehicle, can include a transmitter and/or a receiver capable of communication with a controller that is remote from the vehicle and vehicle charger, and can be controlled by a user or another party (e.g., a power utility) to control battery charging based upon a time of day, cost of power, or other factors.

Claims (37)

1. A vehicle charger for charging a battery of a vehicle, the vehicle charger comprising:

a controller; and

a memory coupled to the controller and storing a vehicle charger setting received from a user, the vehicle charger setting at least partially determining a delay before which the controller will automatically begin charging the battery,

wherein the controller is configured to:

start a vehicle charging session of the battery according to the vehicle charger setting, wherein the vehicle charging session includes the delay before which the controller will automatically begin charging the battery,

in response to a detected level of charge of the battery being below a threshold minimum level of charge, supply, during the delay and independent of the vehicle charger setting, electric power to the battery until a level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge, and

after the level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge, resume operation of the vehicle charging session according to the vehicle charger setting.

2. The vehicle charger of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle charger setting is a time of day.

3. The vehicle charger of claim 2 , wherein the time of day is a time of day by which the battery must be fully charged.

4. The vehicle charger of claim 1 , further comprising a user-manipulatable control coupled to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to receive the vehicle charger setting via the user-manipulatable control.

5. The vehicle charger of claim 4 , further comprising a display coupled to the controller and at least partially defining the user-manipulatable control.

6. The vehicle charger of claim 1 , further comprising a user-manipulatable control, wherein the controller is configured to receive the threshold minimum level of charge via the user-manipulatable control.

The vehicle charger of claim 1 , further comprising a receiver coupled to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to receive a signal from another controller remote from the vehicle and the vehicle charger via the receiver and wherein the controller is configured to begin charging the battery in response to the signal.

8. A method of charging a battery of a vehicle, the method comprising:

starting a vehicle charging session according to a vehicle charger setting, wherein the vehicle charging session includes a delay before which charging of the battery via a vehicular battery charger will automatically begin;

in response to a detected level of charge of the battery being below a threshold minimum level of charge, supplying, during the delay included in the vehicle charging session, power to the battery via the vehicular battery charger until a level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge; and

after the level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge, supplying, during the vehicle charging session, power to the battery via the vehicular battery charger based on the delay, the delay based at least in part upon at least one of a group consisting of a time of day received by a controller of the vehicular battery charger and a cost of power to the vehicular battery charger.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein supplying power to the battery based on the delay comprises supplying power to the battery at least in part upon the time of day, the method further comprising receiving, via a user-manipulatable control of the vehicular battery charger, the time of day.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein receiving the time of day includes receiving a time of day by which the battery must be fully charged.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising displaying the time of day.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising displaying an indicator that the vehicular battery charger is a mode in which power supplied to the battery via the vehicular battery charger is being delayed.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving, at the controller, data from another controller remote from the vehicular battery charger and starting supply of power to the battery via the vehicular battery charger based at least in part upon the data.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving, via a user-manipulatable control of the vehicular battery charger, an input setting the threshold minimum level of charge.

15. A vehicle charger for charging a battery of a vehicle, the vehicle charger comprising:

a controller;

a display coupled to the controller and mounted within the vehicle; and

a memory coupled to the controller and storing a vehicle charger setting received from a user, the vehicle charger setting at least partially determining a delay before which the controller will automatically begin charging the battery,

wherein the controller is configured to:

start a vehicle charging session according to the vehicle charger setting, wherein the vehicle charging session includes the delay before which the controller will automatically begin charging the battery,

in response to a detected level of charge of the battery being below a threshold minimum level of charge during the delay included in the vehicle charging session, supply, during the delay and independent of the vehicle charger setting, electric power to the battery until a level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge, and

after the level of charge of the battery reaches the threshold minimum level of charge is reached, resume operation of the vehicle charging session according to the vehicle charger setting; and

display an indicator on the display indicating that charging of the battery is being delayed.

16. The vehicle charger of claim 15 , wherein the vehicle charger setting is a time of day.

17. The vehicle charger of claim 16 , wherein the time of day is a time of day by which the battery must be fully charged.

18. The vehicle charger of claim 15 , further comprising a user-manipulatable control mounted within the vehicle, wherein the controller receives the vehicle charger setting via the user-manipulatable control.

19. The vehicle charger of claim 18 , wherein the user-manipulatable control is defined at least in part by the display.

20. The vehicle charger of claim 15 , further comprising a user-manipulatable control mounted within the vehicle, wherein the controller receives the threshold minimum level of charge via the user-manipulatable control.
