Abstract

Emulated telemetry interfaces for host processors and management processors coupled over communication fabrics are presented herein. In one example, an apparatus includes a monitoring function executed by a host processor configured to determine telemetry related to operation of at least the host processor. A driver function executed by the host processor is configured to emulate operation of a network interface to an operating system of the host processor for transfer of communications comprising at least the telemetry to a management processor over a communication fabric different than the network interface, where the host processor and the management processor are communicatively coupled to the communication fabric.

Claims (44)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

program instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable media;

wherein the program instructions comprise a monitoring function, that when executed by a host processor, direct the host processor to determine telemetry related to operation of at least the host processor;

wherein the program instructions comprise a driver function, that when executed by the host processor, direct the host processor to emulate operation of a network interface to an operating system of the host processor for transfer of communications comprising at least the telemetry to a management processor over a communication fabric different than the network interface;

wherein the host processor and the management processor are communicatively coupled to the communication fabric; and

wherein the driver function is configured to interface the operating system of the host processor with the management processor using network communications of the network interface which are transported over the communication fabric.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver function, when executed by the host processor, is configured to extract payload data and destination information from the communications received from the operating system and translate the payload data and the destination information into traffic frames for the communication fabric using addressing associated with the management processor on the communication fabric.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver function, when executed by the host processor, is configured to transfer the communications over the communication fabric for delivery to the management processor without processing the communications through a network stack.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver function, when executed by the host processor, is configured to transfer the communications as traffic over the communication fabric for delivery to an emulated network device of the management processor.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the driver function, when executed by the host processor, is configured to provide an application programming interface (API) for at least user applications executed in the operating system to exchange the communications over the communication fabric using the network interface.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the network interface comprises at least one among an Ethernet interface and an InfiniBand interface.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the communication fabric comprises types selected from at least one among a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe), NVMe, FibreChannel, NVLink, Gen-Z, Cache Coherent Interconnect for Accelerators (CCIX), Compute Express Link (CXL), and Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI).

8. The apparatus of claim 2 ,

wherein the driver function, when executed by the host processor, is configured to receive additional traffic frames transferred by the management processor over the communication fabric and translate the additional traffic frames into additional communications over the network interface for the operating system.

9. A method, comprising:

determining telemetry related to operation of at least a host processor;

emulating operation of a network interface to an operating system of the host processor for transfer of communications comprising at least the telemetry to a management processor over a communication fabric different than the network interface, wherein the host processor and the management processor are communicatively coupled to the communication fabric; and

interfacing the operating system of the host processor with the management processor using network communications of the network interface which are transported over the communication fabric.

10. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

extracting payload data and destination information from the communications received from the operating system; and

translating the payload data and the destination information into traffic frames for the communication fabric using addressing associated with the management processor on the communication fabric.

11. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

transferring the communications over the communication fabric for delivery to the management processor without processing the communications through a network stack.

12. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

transferring the communications as traffic over the communication fabric for delivery to an emulated network device of the management processor.

13. The method of claim 9 , comprising:

providing an application programming interface (API) for at least user applications executed in the operating system to exchange the communications over the communication fabric using the network interface.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the network interface comprises at least one among an Ethernet interface and an InfiniBand interface.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the communication fabric comprises types selected from at least one among a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe), NVMe, FibreChannel, NVLink, Gen-Z, Cache Coherent Interconnect for Accelerators (CCIX), Compute Express Link (CXL), and Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI).

16. The method of claim 10 , comprising:

receiving additional traffic frames transferred by the management processor over the communication fabric; and

translating the additional traffic frames into additional communications over the network interface for the operating system.

17. An apparatus comprising:

one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media; and

program instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media, the program instructions executable by a host processor to direct the host processor to at least:

determine telemetry related to operation of at least the host processor;

emulate operation of a network interface to an operating system of the host processor for transfer of communications comprising at least the telemetry to a management processor over a communication fabric different than the network interface, wherein the host processor and the management processor are communicatively coupled to the communication fabric; and

interface the operating system of the host processor with the management processor using network communications of the network interface which are transported over the communication fabric.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , comprising further program instructions executable by the host processor that direct the host processor to at least:

extract payload data and destination information from the communications received from the operating system and translate the payload data and the destination information into traffic frames for the communication fabric using addressing associated with the management processor on the communication fabric.
