Abstract

Occlusion devices, earpiece devices and methods of forming occlusion devices are provided. An occlusion device is configured to occlude an ear canal, but other biological and non-biological conduits or chambers can be occluded using the devices and methods herein. The occlusion device includes an insertion element and at least one occluding member or element (which can be expandable) disposed on the insertion element. The occluding member is configured to receive a medium via the insertion element and is configured to expand, responsive to the medium, to contact the ear canal. Alternatively, the occluding member is made of a non-Newtonian fluid and can be enclosed by a balloon or not. Physical parameters of the occlusion device are selected to produce a predetermined sound attenuation characteristic over a frequency band. Use of a non-Newtonian fluid provides additional options or variables in customizing or designing a predetermined sound attenuation characteristic.

Claims (18)

1. An earpiece, comprising:

an ambient microphone configured to measure the ambient sound near the entrance to a user's ear canal;

an internal microphone configured to measure the sound within the user's ear canal;

a user interface;

a memory that stores instructions;

an expandable element configured to contain a non-Newtonian fluid wherein the non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid wherein the viscosity of the fluid increases when an acoustic pressure against it increases and wherein the viscosity of the fluid reduces when the acoustic pressure against it is reduced;

an inflation management system configured to move non-Newtonian fluid into and out of the expandable element;

a controller, wherein the controller is configured to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

receiving an activation signal from the user interface and activating the inflation management system;

sending a signal to the inflation management system to move non-Newtonian fluid into the expandable element; and

sending a signal to the inflation management system to stop non-Newtonian fluid movement when a threshold comfortable pressure level is reached.

2. The earpiece according to claim 1 , wherein the non-Newtonian fluid is at least one of poly vinyl alcohol, poly dimethylsiloxane, electroheological fluid, magnetorheological fluid, or a combination thereof.

3. The earpiece according to claim 1 , wherein the non-Newtonian fluid includes a carrier liquid and at least one of particles, microspheres, microfibers, rod-like element, nanoparticles, or nano-tubes or a combination thereof.

4. The earpiece according to claim 3 , wherein the particles include at least one of silica, titanium, oxide, calcium carbonate, cornstarch, synthetically occurring minerals, naturally occurring minerals, polymers, glass, stainless steel or a combination thereof.

5. The earpiece according to claim 4 , wherein the particles are magnetic.

6. An eartip comprising:

a stent configured to fit on an earphone; and

an elastic membrane encompassing a medium about the stent, wherein the medium is a non-Newtonian fluid, wherein the medium increases viscosity when an acoustic pressure against it increases and wherein the viscosity of the medium reduces when the acoustic pressure against it reduces.
