Abstract

A digital printing system includes a print head and a processor. The print head is configured to jet droplets of ink. The a processor is further configured to translate a required shade of a color, to be printed at a given location on a substrate by the print head, into a sequence of pulses, the sequence including: (a) up to a predefined maximum number of driving pulses that cause the print head to jet respective droplets, and (b) a tickling pulse, which has a smaller amplitude than the driving pulses and which causes the print head to jet a droplet smaller than the droplets jetted in response to the driving pulses. The processor is additionally configured to apply the sequence of pulses to the print head.

Claims (23)

1. A digital printing system, comprising:

a print head, configured to jet droplets of ink; and

a processor, which is configured to apply to the print head a signal formed of:

time sections with no pulse;

time sections with a driving pulse having an amplitude that causes the print head to jet a respective droplet, regardless of whether the immediately preceding section has a driving pulse or no pulse; and

time sections with a tickling pulse, which has a smaller amplitude than the driving pulse and is such that when it is applied following a driving pulse in an immediately previous section it causes the print head to jet a droplet, while if it is applied immediately after a section with no pulse, it does not cause the print head to jet a droplet.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the driving pulse and the tickling pulse have a same time duration.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to set a time duration of at least one of the time sections with a driving pulse to match a resonance frequency of a pressure wave in the ink inside a jetting channel of the print head.

4. The system according to claim 3 , wherein the processor is configured to set the time duration of the at least one of the time sections with a driving pulse, responsive to a type of the ink.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the signal applied by the processor is formed of a plurality of sequences, each sequence corresponding to a required shade of a color, to be printed at a given location on a substrate by the print head.

6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the processor is configured to apply the tickling pulse in one or more of the plurality of sequences and wherein in each sequence in which the tickling pulse is applied, the tickling pulse is applied at an end of the sequence.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the tickling pulse has an amplitude which when applied after a driving pulse causes the print head to jet a droplet smaller than the droplets jetted in response to the driving pulse.

8. A digital printing method, comprising:

applying to a print head that jets droplets of ink a signal formed of;

time sections with no pulse;

time sections with a driving pulse having an amplitude that causes the print head to jet a respective droplet, regardless of whether the immediately preceding section has a driving pulse or no pulse; and

time sections with a tickling pulse, which has a smaller amplitude than the driving pulse and is such that when it is applied following a driving pulse in an immediately previous section it causes the print head to jet a droplet, while if it is applied immediately after a section with no pulse, it does not cause the print head to jet a droplet.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the driving pulse and for the tickling pulse have a same time duration.

10. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the time duration of at least one of the time sections with a driving pulse matches a resonance frequency of a pressure wave in the ink inside a jetting channel of the print head.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the time duration of the at least one of the time sections with a driving pulse, is set responsive to a type of the ink.

12. The method according to claim 8 , wherein applying the signal comprises applying a signal formed of a plurality of sequences, each sequence corresponding to a required shade of a color, to be printed at a given location on a substrate by the print head.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein in each sequence in which the tickling pulse is applied, the tickling pulse is applied at an end of the sequence.

14. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the tickling pulse has an amplitude which when applied after a driving pulse causes the print head to jet a droplet smaller than the droplets jetted in response to the driving pulse.
