Abstract

Solar devices and methods for producing solar devices are disclosed. In some examples, a solar device includes solar cells arranged in a shingled manner such that adjacent long edges of adjacent ones of the solar cells overlap. The adjacent long edges have a non-linear shape that has protruding portions. The solar device includes contact pads arranged in the protruding portions of the adjacent long edges such that the contact pads of the adjacent ones of the solar cells are electrically connected.

Claims (18)

1. A solar device comprising:

a plurality of solar cell strips each including at least one non-linear edge formed by a scribe line, the non-linear edge including protruding portions,

the solar cell strips being assembled in a shingled manner so that adjacent non-linear edges of adjacent solar cell strips overlap along a plurality of overlapping regions having an overlapping width larger at peaks of the protruding portions than at points between the peaks of the protruding portions,

wherein each of the solar cell strips comprises a row of contact pads disposed laterally along the non-linear edge, and

wherein each row of contact pads further comprises a conductive busbar electrically connecting the contact pads in each row.

2. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the contact pads on each of the solar cell strips are disposed laterally along the non-linear edge at equal distances.

3. The solar device of claim 2 , wherein the distance between contact pads on each of the solar cell strips is equal to a lateral peak-to-peak distance of the respective non-linear edge.

4. The solar device of claim 3 , wherein a peak-to-trough distance of the non-linear edge is between 3 mm to 30 mm.

5. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein each contact pad has a width of about 1 mm to about 5 mm and a length of about 1 mm to about 10 mm.

6. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive busbar has a width that varies along the row of contact pads such that the conductive busbar tapers from a full width in a region near a contact pad to a narrow width in a region between contact pads.

7. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive busbar has a width that varies such that one edge is substantially flat and another edge follows the scribe line.

8. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the solar cell strips comprises a straight top row of contact pads along a top edge.

9. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein each of the scribe lines follows a periodic waveform shape.

10. The solar device of claim 1 , further comprising a conductive adhesive bonding material at the protruding portions of the solar cell strips.

11. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the solar cell strips includes a second non-linear edge at an opposite side of the solar cell strip from the non-linear edge.

12. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the non-linear edge has a periodic waveform shape.

13. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the periodic waveform shape is sinusoidal, square, rectangular, triangular, or sawtooth.

14. The solar device of claim 1 , wherein the non-linear edge has a non-periodic waveform shape.
