Abstract

A lighting system includes a light source, a light redirection element, and a movement mechanism coupled to the light source and the light redirection element. The movement mechanism is configured to simultaneously or stepwise move the light source and the light redirection element between a top lighting position and an interlighting position.

Claims (32)

1. A lighting system, comprising:

a light source;

a light redirection element; and

a movement mechanism coupled to the light source and to the light redirection element, the movement mechanism configured to selectively adjust both (i) the height of the light source and the height of the light redirection element and (ii) a distance between the light source and the light redirection element in a single operation to move the light source and the light redirection element between (i) a first orientation in which the light redirection element is positioned apart from the light source such that light from the light source is emitted in a first emission direction, and (ii) a second orientation in which the light redirection element is positioned near the light source such that light emitted by the light source is emitted in a second emission direction.

2. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the movement mechanism is configured to move the light source at a first vertical movement rate and the light redirection element at a second vertical movement rate.

3. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the first orientation is a top lighting orientation and the second orientation is an interlighting orientation.

4. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the movement mechanism is further configured to move the light source and the light redirection element in a stepwise fashion.

5. The lighting system of claim 1 , the movement mechanism further comprising:

a motor;

a shaft coupled to the motor;

a first wheel coupled to the shaft, the first wheel further coupled to the light source; and

a second wheel coupled to the shaft, the second wheel further coupled to the light redirection element.

6. The lighting system of claim 5 , wherein a diameter of the first wheel is greater than a diameter of the second wheel.

7. The lighting system of claim 2 , wherein the first vertical movement rate is greater than the second vertical movement rate.

8. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the light source is at least a first light emitting diode (LED).

9. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the light redirection element includes at least one of a reflector and a lens.

10. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the light in the first emission direction is directed substantially to a top surface of an object.

11. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the light in the second emission direction is directed substantially to a lateral surface of an object.

12. A method for top lighting and interlighting using a luminaire, comprising:

simultaneously or stepwise moving, by a movement mechanism, a light source at a first vertical movement rate and a light redirection element at a second vertical movement rate, the movement mechanism being separately coupled to the light source and the light redirection element;

positioning, at a first time, the light source at a first vertical position and the light redirection element at a first vertical distance from the light source to direct light from the light source to an object at a first emission direction;

positioning, at second time, the light source at a second vertical position and the light redirection element at a second vertical distance from the light source to direct light from the light source to the object at a second emission direction using the light redirection element.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first vertical movement rate is greater than the second vertical movement rate.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first vertical distance is greater than the second vertical distance.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the light source comprises at least a first LED.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the light redirection element includes at least one of a reflector or a lens.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the light in the first emission direction is directed substantially to a top surface of the object.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the light in the second emission direction is directed substantially to a lateral surface of the object.

19. A lighting system, comprising:

a light source;

a light redirection element; and

a movement mechanism coupled to the light source and the light redirection element, the movement mechanism configured to selectively adjust both (i) the height of the light source and the height of the light redirection element and (ii) to simultaneously or stepwise adjust a distance between the light source and the light redirection element in a single operation to move the light source and light redirection element between two set positions, where the distance between the light source and the redirection element changes between the two set positions.
