Abstract

A wireless electronic lockset comprising a processing unit, a locking bolt, a motor, a wireless communication tag, and a wireless interface is disclosed. The lockset is capable of connecting to a mobile device via a first communication protocol and/or a second communication protocol. The lockset sends a value to the mobile device via the first communication protocol and receives an actuation command via the second communication protocol if the mobile device has been verified by a server. The actuation command causes the lockset to lock or unlock the door.

Claims (43)

1. A method of actuating a locking bolt of a wireless electronic lockset, the method comprising:

associating a mobile device with an authorized user;

detecting that the mobile device is in close proximity to the wireless electronic lockset;

in response to detecting that the mobile device is in close proximity to the wireless electronic lockset, providing a value from the wireless electronic lockset to the mobile device;

receiving, from the mobile device, an actuation command, wherein the mobile device sends the actuation command after performing a validation including the value and account information indicating that the mobile device is associated with the authorized user;

in response to receiving, at the wireless electronic lockset, the actuation command, actuating a motor of the wireless electronic lockset to move the locking bolt between locked and unlocked positions;

updating a status of the wireless electronic lockset; and

disconnecting from the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a smart phone or a smart watch.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the value is a shared key.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein actuating the motor to move the locking bolt between the locked and unlocked positions comprises actuating the motor to move the locking bolt from the locked position to the unlocked position.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising periodically updating the value.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting that the mobile device in close proximity to the wireless electronic lockset comprises receiving a query from the mobile device via a short-range wireless protocol.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the value from the wireless electronic lockset to the mobile device comprises providing, via a first wireless communication protocol, a first value to the mobile device from a near-field communication (NFC) tag having a memory storing the value.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein receiving, from the mobile device, the actuation command comprises receiving the actuation command via a near-field communication protocol.

9. A method of actuating a wireless electronic lockset from a mobile device, the method comprising:

establishing a secure connection to the wireless electronic lockset;

receiving, at the mobile device, a value from the wireless electronic lockset, wherein the value is sent by the wireless electronic lockset in response to detecting that the mobile device is in close proximity to the wireless electronic lockset;

verifying, based on the value and an identifier, that the mobile device is associated with an authorized user, wherein the identifier is associated with an account that has been previously associated with the wireless electronic lockset;

in response to verifying that the mobile device is associated with the authorized user, transmitting, from the mobile device, an actuation command to the wireless electronic lockset; and

disconnecting from the wireless electronic lockset.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mobile device is a smart phone or a smart watch.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the value is a random number.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the mobile device is within communication range of a wireless communication tag of the wireless electronic lockset using near-field communication (NFC).

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising, prior to receiving, at the mobile device, the value from the wireless electronic lockset, querying the wireless electronic lockset from the mobile device via a short-range wireless protocol.

14. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein receiving the value from the wireless electronic lockset is performed at a mobile application installed on the mobile device;

wherein validating, based on the value and the identifier, that the mobile device is associated with the authorized user is performed by the mobile application; and

wherein transmitting the actuation command to the wireless electronic lockset is performed by the mobile application.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the identifier includes a certificate.

16. The method of claim 9 ,

wherein receiving, at the mobile device, the value from the wireless electronic lockset comprises receiving the value via a first wireless communication protocol; and

wherein transmitting, from the mobile device, the actuation command to the wireless electronic lockset comprises transmitting the actuation command via a second wireless communication protocol.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first wireless communication protocol is different from the second wireless communication protocol.

18. The method of claim 9 , wherein verifying, based on the value and the identifier, that the mobile device is associated with the authorized user comprises transmitting, from the mobile device, the value and the identifier to a key server.

19. A method of actuating a wireless electronic device lockset, the method comprising:

establishing a secure connection to the wireless electronic lockset via a first communication protocol;

in response to detecting a second communication protocol by being in close proximity to a wireless communication tag of the wireless electronic lockset, receiving a value via the second wireless protocol at a mobile device;

transmitting the value and an identifier, wherein the identifier is associated with an account that has been previously associated with the wireless electronic lockset, to a key server for validation;

in response to receiving a validation confirmation, transmitting an actuation command via the first communication protocol;

updating a status of the wireless electronic lockset; and

disconnecting, via the first communication protocol, the mobile device from the wireless electronic lockset.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the first communication protocol and the second communication protocol are a same communication protocol.
