Abstract

A hemodialysis system is disclosed. The hemodialysis system includes a dialyzer, a saline container including saline, and a disposable set comprising a blood pumping tube fluidly connected to a first end of the dialyzer, an arterial line fluidly connected to a first end of the blood pumping tube, a venous line fluidly connected to a second end of the dialyzer, a saline line fluidly connected to the blood pumping tube and the saline container, and a dialyzer line fluidly connected to a second end of the blood pumping tube and a second end of the dialyzer. The hemodialysis system also includes a dialysis instrument comprising an arterial line clamp, a venous line clamp, and a saline valve. The saline rinses blood out of the arterial line when the venous line clamp is closed, the arterial line clamp is opened, and the saline value is opened.

Claims (50)

1. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a saline container including saline fluid;

a disposable set including:

a blood pumping tube fluidly connected to a first end of the dialyzer,

an arterial line fluidly connected to a first end of the blood pumping tube,

a venous line fluidly connected to a second end of the dialyzer,

a saline line fluidly connected to the blood pumping tube and the saline container, and

a dialyzer line fluidly connected to a second end of the blood pumping tube and the second end of the dialyzer,

wherein saline line includes a branch line that is fluidly connected to the dialyzer line; and

a dialysis instrument including

a blood pump head,

a motor positioned and arranged to operate the blood pump head,

an arterial line clamp positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the arterial line,

a venous line clamp positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the venous line,

a saline valve positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the saline line, and

a second saline valve positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the branch line,

wherein the dialysis instrument is configured to use the saline fluid from the saline container via the saline line to rinse blood out of the arterial line by causing the venous line clamp to close, the arterial line clamp to open, the saline valve to open, and the second saline valve to close.

2. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the arterial line is fluidly coupled to a patient and the saline fluid causes the blood to rinse through the arterial line back to the patient.

3. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the saline fluid rinses the blood out of the venous line when the arterial line clamp is closed, the venous line clamp is opened, and the saline valve is opened.

The hemodialysis system of claim 3 , wherein the dialysis instrument further includes an air separation chamber fluidly connected to the venous line, and wherein the saline fluid additionally rinses the blood out of the air separation chamber when the arterial line clamp is closed, the venous line clamp is opened, and the saline valve is opened.

5. The hemodialysis system of claim 3 , wherein the venous line is fluidly coupled to a patient and the saline fluid causes the blood to rinse through the venous line back to the patient.

The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis instrument is configured to use the saline fluid via the saline line and the branch line to rinse the blood out of the blood pumping tube and the arterial line by causing the venous line clamp to close, the arterial line clamp to open, the saline valve to close, and the second saline valve to open.

7. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein a positioning of the saline container relative to the disposable set and the dialysis instrument uses gravity to cause the saline fluid to flow from the saline container through the arterial line.

8. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a container including a physiologically compatible solution;

a disposable set including:

a blood pumping tube or chamber fluidly connected to a first end of the dialyzer,

an arterial line fluidly connected to a first end of the blood pumping tube or chamber,

a venous line fluidly connected to a second end of the dialyzer,

a physiologically compatible solution line fluidly connected to the blood pumping tube or chamber and the container, and

a dialyzer line fluidly connected to a second end of the blood pumping tube or chamber and the second end of the dialyzer,

wherein the physiologically compatible solution line includes a branch line that is fluidly connected to the dialyzer line; and

a dialysis instrument including

an arterial line clamp positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the arterial line,

a venous line clamp positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the venous line,

a physiologically compatible solution valve positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the physiologically compatible solution line, and

a second physiologically compatible solution valve positioned and arranged to control fluid flow through the branch line,

wherein the dialysis instrument is configured to use the physiologically compatible solution from the container via the physiologically compatible solution line to rinse blood out of the venous line by causing the arterial line clamp to close, the venous line clamp to open, the physiologically compatible solution valve to open, and the second physiologically compatible solution valve to close.

The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the dialysis instrument further includes an air separation chamber fluidly connected to the venous line, and wherein the physiologically compatible solution additionally rinses the blood out of the air separation chamber when the arterial line clamp is closed, the venous line clamp is opened, and the physiologically compatible solution valve is opened.

10. The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the venous line is fluidly coupled to a patient and the dialysis instrument is configured to use the physiologically compatible solution to cause the blood to rinse through the venous line back to the patient.

The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the dialysis instrument is configured to use the physiologically compatible solution to rinse the blood out of the arterial line by causing the venous line clamp to close, the arterial line clamp to open, the physiologically compatible solution valve to open, and the second physiologically compatible solution valve to close.

12. The hemodialysis system of claim 11 , wherein the arterial line is fluidly coupled to a patient and the physiologically compatible solution causes the blood to rinse through the arterial line back to the patient.

The hemodialysis system of claim 11 , wherein a positioning of the container relative to the disposable set and the dialysis instrument uses gravity to cause the physiologically compatible solution to flow from the container through the arterial line after the venous line clamp is closed, the arterial line clamp is opened, and the physiologically compatible solution valve is opened.

The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein a positioning of the container relative to the disposable set and the dialysis instrument uses gravity to cause the physiologically compatible solution to flow from the container through the venous line after the arterial line clamp is closed, the venous line clamp is opened, and the physiologically compatible solution valve is opened.

15. The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the physiologically compatible solution is saline.

16. The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the dialyzer includes hollow fibers.

17. The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the disposable set includes a cassette.

18. The hemodialysis system of claim 8 , wherein the dialysis instrument is configured to use the physiologically compatible solution via the physiologically compatible solution line and the branch line to rinse the blood out of the blood pumping tube or chamber and the arterial line by causing the venous line clamp to close, the arterial line clamp to open, the physiologically compatible solution valve to close, and the second physiologically compatible solution valve to open.
