Abstract

Embodiments provide an aerodynamic toolbox assembly comprising a toolbox coupled to a tractor trailer and an aerodynamic fairing assembly coupled to the toolbox. At least one fairing component extends beyond a selected surface of the toolbox to facilitate aerodynamic air flow past the toolbox during normal operation of the trailer.

Claims (26)

1. An aerodynamic fairing system for use with a vehicle-mounted toolbox comprising:

an aerodynamic fairing assembly adapted to be integrated with a toolbox mounted to a vehicle, the toolbox comprising a front panel, a top panel, a bottom panel, a rear panel, a first side panel and a second side panel,

the aerodynamic fairing assembly comprising:

at least one fairing integrated with one or more of the top panel of the toolbox, the bottom panel of the toolbox, the first side panel of the toolbox and the second side panel of the toolbox.

2. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fairing is further adapted to extend beyond a selected one or more of the top panel, the bottom panel, the front panel, or the rear panel.

3. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more of the front panel, the top panel, the rear panel, or the bottom panel is configured to pivot.

4. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein a length of the toolbox is adjustable.

5. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the toolbox is adapted to removably receive one or more additional aerodynamic fairings.

6. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the toolbox is adapted to removably receive one or more mud flaps.

7. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the toolbox comprises a door shaped to direct air flow rearward and outward.

8. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 7 , wherein the toolbox comprises a door angled outward.

9. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 7 , wherein the toolbox comprises a curved door.

10. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 7 , wherein the toolbox comprises one or more reversible doors adapted to allow the toolbox to be configured as a mirror image on each side of the vehicle.

11. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the toolbox comprises a door providing an aerodynamic surface with a leading edge further inboard than a trailing edge.

12. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of a fairing leading edge of the at least one fairing or a fairing trailing edge of the at least one fairing is shaped to a curvature of one or more wheels located adjacent to the toolbox.

13. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one fairing is adapted to increase a storage area of the toolbox.

14. The aerodynamic fairing system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more fairings are shaped to direct air flow rearward and outward.

15. An aerodynamic toolbox, comprising:

a toolbox for use with a vehicle, the toolbox comprising a top panel, a bottom panel, a rear panel, a first side panel, a second side panel, and one or more doors adapted to reduce aerodynamic drag by directing airflow outward and rearward, wherein:

the first side panel is located in front of the one or more doors and proximate to the front of the vehicle when installed on the vehicle, and the second side panel is located behind the one or more doors and proximate to the rear of the vehicle when installed on the vehicle; and

the first side panel is smaller than the second side panel of the toolbox, thereby positioning the leading edge of the one or more doors inboard of the trailing edge of the one or more doors when installed on the vehicle.

16. The aerodynamic toolbox of claim 15 , wherein one or more fairings are integrated with one or more of the top panel of the toolbox, the bottom panel of the toolbox, the first side panel or the second side panel.

17. The aerodynamic toolbox of claim 15 , wherein the one or more doors are angled in relation to the rear panel of the toolbox.

18. The aerodynamic toolbox of claim 15 , wherein the one or more doors are curved.

19. The aerodynamic toolbox of claim 15 , wherein the one or more doors are reversible to allow the toolbox to be installed as a mirror image on each side of the vehicle.

20. The aerodynamic toolbox of claim 15 , wherein one or more of the leading edge and the trailing edge is shaped to the curvature of a wheel located adjacent to the toolbox when installed on the vehicle.
