Abstract

A fixation device includes a head, a tapered body coupled to the head and extending along a central longitudinal axis, and a flexible tail extending distally from the tapered body and defining a central bore therethrough. The flexible tail is movable from an initial configuration aligned with the central longitudinal axis to a deflected configuration that extends away from the central longitudinal axis when a force is applied to the flexible tail.

Claims (20)

1. A method of inserting a fixation device into a vertebrae, comprising:

inserting an unthreaded flexible tail of the fixation device into an insertion hole in osseous tissue in a first configuration;

driving a tapered body coupled proximal to the unthreaded flexible tail into the osseous tissue, a head extending proximally from the tapered body; and

deflecting the unthreaded flexible tail from the first configuration to a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of deflecting the unthreaded flexible tail includes deflecting the unthreaded flexible tail from the first configuration that is aligned with a central longitudinal axis of the fixation device to the second configuration that is misaligned with the central longitudinal axis.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inserting the unthreaded flexible tail into includes inserting at least a portion of the tapered body into the insertion hole.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising rotating a head of the fixation device to engage helical threads disposed on an outer surface of the tapered body with the osseous tissue.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of rotating the head includes rotating the tapered body about a central longitudinal axis.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling the fixation device to a coupling element for receiving a spinal rod.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of coupling the fixation device to the coupling element includes advancing a bore of an insert over the head of the fixation device.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the step of advancing the bore of the insert includes expanding a snap ring around the head of the fixation device to secure the coupling element to a neck of the fixation device.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising engaging outer threads disposed on the head with corresponding internal threads of the coupling element.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of deflecting the unthreaded flexible tail includes compressing and tensioning a series of alternating trapezoidal cuts in a shaft portion of the unthreaded flexible tail.

11. A method of securing a fixation device to osseous tissue, comprising:

inserting an unthreaded flexible tail of a fixation device into an insertion hole in osseous tissue;

inserting a portion of a tapered body into the insertion hole;

rotating a head located proximally to the tapered body; and

redirecting the unthreaded flexible tail from a first configuration to a second configuration as the unthreaded flexible tail encounters a force.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising rotating a head of the fixation device to engage threads disposed on an outer surface of the tapered body with the osseous tissue.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising inserting a guide wire through a central bore of the fixation device.
