Abstract

In one example embodiment, a computer-implemented method for autonomous vehicle control includes determining whether a cargo container is attached to the vehicle base. The method includes controlling a front shield associated with an autonomous vehicle to move from a closed position to an opened position when a cargo container is determined to be attached to a vehicle base associated with the autonomous vehicle. The method includes controlling the front shield to move from the opened position to the closed position when the cargo container is not attached to the vehicle base.

Claims (38)

1. An autonomous vehicle, comprising:

a vehicle base comprising a portion for receiving a cargo container and a section defining a holding space, the section defining the holding space being positioned at least partially within the portion for receiving the cargo container;

a shield mounted to the vehicle base, the shield adjustable between an opened position and a closed position, at least a portion of the shield positioned within the holding space in the closed position, at least a portion of the shield positioned outside of the holding space in the open position; and

an actuator coupled to the shield, the actuator operable to adjust the shield between the opened position and the closed position.

2. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a height of the autonomous vehicle is defined between a ground level and a top of the shield in the open position.

3. The autonomous vehicle of claim 2 , further comprising:

the cargo container coupled to the vehicle base at the portion for receiving the cargo container,

wherein the actuator is operable to adjust the height of the autonomous vehicle to be equal to a height of the container, the height of the cargo container defined between the ground level and a top of the cargo container.

4. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor positioned on the shield, the sensor configured to detect a top of the cargo container attached to the vehicle base.

5. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a marking light positioned on the shield, the marking light configured for marking a surface of the shield for an observer of the autonomous vehicle.

6. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a width of the autonomous vehicle is defined between opposing sides of the autonomous vehicle, a width of the shield is defined between opposing sides of the shield, and the width of the autonomous vehicle is equal to the width of the shield.

7. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield comprises an expandable panel configured to selectively adjust a height or a width of the shield.

8. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield comprises an articulating panel adjustable to extend a height or a width of the shield.

9. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield comprises a flexible membrane stretched over an articulating structure, the articulating structure adjustable to fill a gap between the shield and the cargo container attached to the vehicle base.

10. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor positioned on the shield.

11. The autonomous vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the sensor is a camera or a LIDAR system.

12. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield is substantially in contact with the vehicle base in the closed position.

13. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield is attached to the vehicle base at a first attachment point, the attachment point capable of attaching to the cargo container being a second attachment point, the container is attachable to the vehicle base at the second attachment point, and the first attachment point is positioned in front of the second attachment point on the vehicle base relative to a forward direction of travel of the autonomous vehicle.

14. The autonomous vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the shield is oriented in a horizontal position in the closed position, and the shield is oriented in a vertical position in the open position.

15. The autonomous vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the vertical position is substantially perpendicular to the horizontal position.

16. An autonomous vehicle, comprising:

a vehicle base comprising a portion for receiving a cargo container and a section defining a holding space the section defining the holding space being positioned at least partially within the portion for receiving the cargo container,

the vehicle base having a first attachment point and a second attachment point, the first attachment point positioned in front of the second attachment point on the vehicle base relative to a forward direction of travel of the autonomous vehicle, the vehicle base configured such that a container is attachable to the vehicle base at the second attachment point;

a shield attached to vehicle base at the first attachment point, the shield adjustable between an opened position and a closed position, wherein in the closed position, at least a portion of the shield is positioned within the holding space,

wherein in the open position, at least a portion of the shield is positioned outside of the holding space; and

an actuator coupled to the shield, the actuator operable to adjust the shield between the opened position and the closed position.

17. The autonomous vehicle of claim 16 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to detect the top of the container,

wherein a height of the autonomous vehicle is defined between a ground level and a top of the shield in the opened position and the height of the container defined between the ground level and a top of the container, and

wherein the actuator is operable to adjust the height of the autonomous vehicle to be equal to the height of the container.

18. The autonomous vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the shield is substantially in contact with the vehicle base in the closed position.

19. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving data associated with a cargo container;

determining that the cargo container is to be attached to a vehicle base associated with an autonomous vehicle, the vehicle base-comprising a portion for receiving a cargo container and a section defining a holding space, the section defining the holding space being positioned at least partially within the portion for receiving the cargo container; and

controlling a shield, mounted to the vehicle base, to move from a closed position to an opened position based on the determination that the cargo container is to be attached to the vehicle base associated with the autonomous vehicle, wherein in the closed position, at least a portion of the shield is positioned within a holding space of the vehicle base, and wherein in the open position, at least a portion of the shield is positioned outside of the holding space.

20. The computing implemented method of claim 19 , further comprising:

determining that the cargo container is removed from the vehicle base associated with the autonomous vehicle; and

controlling the shield to move from the opened position to the closed position based on the determination that the cargo container is removed from the vehicle base.
